Clifton Gilliam Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Dec. 29, 2025.
Clifton "Cliff" Earl Gilliam was born on January 27, 1955, in Windsor, Bertie County, North Carolina, to Esther Gilliam and his stepfather, Leon Freeman.
Cliff was born blind, but he never allowed this to limit his joy or his love for life. He especially loved attending church and listening to gospel music, which brought him great comfort and happiness. He first attended Greater Bethel Baptist Church and visited several churches over the years, but he ultimately found his church home at Overcome Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where he became a lifelong member under the leadership of Pastor Charles Bowman.
Cliff truly enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and nephews, especially during family birthday celebrations and holidays. His home was often filled with the sound of him singing gospel songs and praising God. He loved listening to Shirley Caesar, quartet gospel groups, and football games-cheering faithfully for his favorite team, the New York Giants, proudly known as "Big Blue."
During the summers, Cliff participated in weekend outings with The Arc of Essex, where he enjoyed trips to the mall, movie theaters, and bingo. He also attended the Occupational Center for the Blind in Orange, New Jersey, for several years.
Cliff is survived by his siblings: Sharon Freeman-Cherry, Kenneth J. Freeman, and Cathy Freeman. Also, one Aunt and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rose Freeman Carter (Terrance Carter) and Gina Freeman.
