Cloyd John Rose, age 92, of Summit, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Cloyd was born in
Erie, PA on January 4, 1931, a son of the late Arthur and Eleanor Greiner Rose.
Cloyd married Rita Jean Heintz in 1958 and celebrated 63 years of loving marriage together. He was preceded in death by Rita in 2021. Cloyd was raised in Erie and graduated from Academy High School. He graduated from Penn State University, majoring in Civil Engineering, further earning his Professional Engineers License. Cloyd served in the U.S. Army for two years, while being stationed in Europe, and began his professional career with Johnson & Gray Architects as a Structural Engineer. He later joined H. Platt Company where he served as Vice President and Professional Engineer, leaving behind a distinguished career of over 40 years. Cloyd was involved in the structural design and construction of many prominent buildings throughout the Erie area.
Cloyd was a loving father and grandfather who cherished supporting all his children and grandchildren and their many sporting and artistic interests. He also loved playing with his dog, Mini. Cloyd enjoyed hunting, bowling, spending time outdoors at the Rose Farm and was a competitive Yahtzee player. He was an avid Penn State fan and would take every opportunity to loyally follow the Nittany Lions. Cloyd was a community-minded individual who always lived the belief in giving back to his community. He was a long-time member of St. George Parish and served as a board member and Little League coach for over 15 years with the Summit Township Recreation Association. Further, Cloyd served for 40 years as a board member of the Summit Township Sewer Authority and was a regular attendee at the Summit Township Senior Luncheons.
In addition to his parents, Cloyd was preceded in death by sisters Evelyn Lydic and Viola Lintelman.
Cloyd is survived by his four sons, all of Erie; Mark Rose (Valerie), Matthew Rose (Maureen), Michael Rose (Michele) and Patrick Rose; eight grandchildren; Dan (Erin), Abby (Ramroth), Drew, Jack, Jennifer, Julia, Noah, Katy and his great grandson, Luke. Further, he is survived by his brother, Earl Rose, also of
Erie, PA.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Sunday, May 21st and are invited to a prayer service there on Monday May 22nd at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. George Catholic Church at 10 a.m., with Fr. Brian Vossler officiating. Burial will follow at the Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
