Clyde G. Holmes

Our dear family member, friend, colleague, and tutor, Clyde G. Holmes, passed away September 15, 2024, from complications due to a long battle with dementia.

 Born July 21, 1937, in Mayville, WI, Clyde led an active life alongside his high school sweetheart and wife, Marilyn Holmes (nee Miller), whom he married on February 7, 1959. They were graduates of Wautoma High School and shared a lifelong journey for the next 65 years. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a couple of years, they decided to start a family and dedicated their time and energy to raising two sons, Brian and Alan. Simultaneously, he began his career in research and development for a paper products company that eventually became American Can Company in Neenah, WI, where he was employed for most of his professional career. During his career, he went back to college and attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in December 1978. His career was focused in the areas of developing consumable paper products and in the use of films and foils for food packaging until his retirement in 2000.

 A true engineer at heart, his passions were outside of work utilizing his inventive mind and talented hands. He spent his free time designing and building a myriad of projects including a cottage on Wheeler Lake, race boats for “the boys” (himself included), several entries in the Fox River Bathtub Boat contest with his engineering coworkers, furniture building and woodworking, automobile restoration, and lending a hand on numerous construction projects for his siblings, nieces, nephews, and sons, to name a few. In addition, he and Marilyn were avid travelers whether by air or RV, snowmobiling enthusiasts in the winter, and boating enthusiasts in the summer. Throughout his life, and especially in retirement, he was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Wautoma, as well as Grace United Methodist Church of Wautoma. In all his endeavors he brought his quick wit and sharp sense of humor to the table.

 Clyde was preceded in death by his parents (Clyde and Isabel Holmes) and his siblings (Harvie, Frank, Minnie Jeanette, and Carol). He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Brian (Jeff Walker), son Alan (Janice Levine), grand-daughter Shannon (Steve Harris) and great grand-daughter Sawyer Harris, as well as several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces, great grand nephews and many lifelong friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 23, 2024 at Grace United Methodist Church in Wautoma from 9:00 a.m. until the Masonic Services begins at 11:00 a.m. followed by a traditional funeral service with Rev. Stephanie Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Wautoma Union Cemetery.
