Coy Dewey Gaskin, 77, of the Griffith Community, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on October 28, 2025. Coy was born on January 15, 1948, in Starkville, to Dewey Frances and Flora Boyette Gaskin. He grew up in the Bell School House Community in Oktibbeha County and was a member of Griffith Christian Church. He was devoted to a life in Christ and the promise of His mercy and eternal salvation.

Coy attended Starkville public schools, where he played as a lineman on the football team. After graduating in 1967, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country honorably in Vietnam. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he worked at Gulf States in Starkville, MS, and later at Babcock & Wilcox in West Point, where he eventually retired.

Coy married Gertrude Jasper on July 9, 1971, to whom he was a loving and devoted partner throughout their 54 years of marriage. Their union was blessed with a son, John, whom he loved dearly and taught by example to be kind and hardworking. Coy had many nieces and nephews whom he held close to his heart as if they were his own. He was a hard worker who was always willing to help his family, neighbors, or anyone in need. In his free time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed being close to nature.

Coy is survived by his wife, Gertrude Gaskin, of the Griffith Community; his son, John Gaskin (Megan) of Starkville; siblings Jerry Gaskin (Regina) of Niceville, Florida, and Doris Sagely (Roy) of Starkville; sister-in-law Cindy Cliett of the Griffith Community; and many nieces and nephews. Coy was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Gaskin; mother, Flora Gaskin Bean; siblings James Edward Armstrong and Joyce Armstrong Yeatman; sister-in-law Martha Jo Brand; and brothers-in-law Harrell Yeatman, Burt Brand, and Andy Cliett.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the wonderful caregivers of Comfort Care, as well as the nurses, therapists, doctors, and staff of North Mississippi Home Health Services and North Mississippi Home Health Hospice, for their compassionate care.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 1, at 1:00 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home in West Point. A celebration of Coy's life with military funeral honors will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Calvert Funeral Home Chapel, with Chaplain Ronnie Hatfield and Dr. James Towery officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, or to the Palo Alto Cemetery Fund, c/o Jack Elliott, Jr., 7376 Hwy 47, West Point, Mississippi 39773.
