Craig Gummerson Obituary
Craig C. Gummerson, 71, of Cayuga, passed away unexpectedly on December 20, 2023. Born in Auburn on April 26, 1952, Craig was the son of the late Charles and Lucille (Quinn) Gummerson.
Craig worked for the New York State Department of Corrections. He dedicated over 30 years of his life and retired as a Captain. Craig was well-respected by everyone he ever worked with. Even after 17 years of retirement, people still looked to Captain Gummerson for support and advice.
Craig always took care of everyone in every way he could. You could see his manicured lawns at the church and many friend's houses around his neighborhood in the summer and snow-cleared driveways in the winter. His dedication to the church will be sorely missed. If there was something to be done, you would find Craig doing it.
One of the most incredible things about Craig was his perseverance. In the face of every adversity, he remained positive. His sense of humor was rivaled by very few. His ability to make everyone around him feel better will be missed. You could not spend time with Craig without smiling and laughing. Words cannot describe the gift that Craig was to every life he touched. When you think of Craig, always keep a smile in your heart.
Craig is survived by his soulmate and love of his life, his beloved wife of 51 years, Linda Gummerson; his brother, Al Gummerson; his mother-in-law, who he referred to as "mother", Sylvia Lees; his niece, Ashley Granato; his nephews, Eric and Marc Gummerson; his godson, Jack Hargreaves; his honorary daughter, Tessa Marie; Tom Stadniuk, who was like a brother to Craig; his loving beagle, Sophie May and many aunts, uncles, and good friends.
In addition to his parents, Craig was predeceased by the light of his life, his son Sean Gummerson in 2003; his siblings, Bret Gummerson, Charla Gummerson, Lance Gummerson and Ellen Fiorenzo.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 26th at noon in St. Lukes United Church of Christ, 25 Seminary Street, Auburn NY. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Auburn. Friends are welcome to visit with the family from 10am-12pm in church.
