Crespin Cortez Lara (96) of EI Paso, Texas quietly passed away December 10, 2023. Crespin, (Chris), was born to Carlos and Candelaria Lara December 5, 1927 in Shafter Texas. After losing his parents at a young age, Chris was raised by a loving family, Mauro and Maria Cortez, near Artesia NM. Chris joined the Army Air Cor December 17, 1945 and received an honorable discharge (disability) August 28, 1947. After the service, he shared many memories working as a milkman, lumber, shipyard, and oilfield laborer. Later, he found his true passion for playing golf, and could always be found on the golf course. Ideally, he started working as a golf course groundskeeper in several NM cities, before landing the position as Golf Course Superintendent at Fort Bliss. He retired from Fort Bliss in 1992, but never retired from playing golf.
Chris is preceded in death by son, David Lara, and grandson, Lawrence Margerum. He is survived by daughter, Elsie and son-in-law Edward Margerum; daughter-in-law, Dora Loya; grandsons, Anthony Lara, Doug Lara and Crespin Margerum; adopted granddaughters, Arlette Camacho and Lynnette Cole; long-time companion, Sandra Horn, and many loving nephews and nieces from the Lara and Cortez families.
Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 8:00pm with a Rosary at 6:00pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass Drive. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:30am on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 10000, Pheasant Road. Committal Service to follow at 1:00pm on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Honors. Reception to follow at Peter Piper Pizza located 10771 Gateway S Blvd.
