After all these years, my love and fondness for Luccio & Sylvia is palpable and on the surface, never retreating. Sylvia was a great mentor and friend in my first two years of teaching. Luccio was a great bringer of joy, laughter and acceptance. Christina-always love and fun. Thinking of all of you!

Luccio was my friend and his support as well as Sylvia´s helped the through some trying times. He and Sylvia made our group of SU friends made us not fear growing older as they did it with such class. They became our role models for living a good and generous life surrounded by love and laughter and grace. Can´t wait to explore what comes next with him when I get to see him again. . Looking forward to more laughs and warm hugs. And thank you for giving us Christina. She as well is a gift beyond compare.

Dear Silvia and Cristina:
I was sitting in my study in Albuquerque this morning when my eyes jumped to the bookshelf where stood the marble bookends, that my friend Luccio made for me just prior to my departure from Sicily. It reminded me of my ongoing dedication to find my friend and how much I have missed our relationship since Carolina, Pelu, Derek and myself departed Sigonella, Catania and our entire Zappoli family in 1972. I could never talk about my military service without mentioning my home and family in Sicily.
We were fortunate, as were several other Navy personnel, to share your wonderful home and to be associated with your family. Luccio and I spent a lot of Saturday mornings drinking cafe and shopping for flowers in the city before making our trips up the mountain to "The Wine Man" in order to replenish our bottles before we would get ready for the barbecue on the patio. I particularly recall carrying on numerous conversations while I stood on the patio and Luccio directed arrangements from the terrace, dressed only in a manly pair of tight white underwear. In one arm he held the beautiful Cristina and in the other hand...an A&W Root Beer mug filled with good Sicilian red wine and sliced peaches. Somewhere, right behind him, stood his wonderful Silvia, assuring that he did not drop the baby...or the wine.
Thank you Silvia for allowing Carolina and myself to be a part of your extended family. When you talk to Luccio, tell him I miss him.
Bruce' Balls.

Sylvia and Cristina - I still remember my times with my friend Luccio and the family and the many Sunday dinner at Mom and Dads before I went off to work at Sigonella. You all treated me like family. I have never forgotten those days, I hold them dear. I am sorry to hear that my buddy Luccio is gone. I wish you and the family my warmest thoughts. - Wes

I'm sorry to be so late with this Sylvia.
It has to happen to all of us, but I didn't expect such a lover of life that Luccio was, to have been struck down so soon.
My prayers and thoughts of his life when I knew him, are for you.

Carissima Mom:

It has taken me a year to write you a dedication about my one and only Papi, Luccio. Mom, Papi' loved you so much. He always told me, take care of your mother and never leave her alone. "E' una vera 'CROCE'." He compared you to Christ in your strength, devotion, love and loyality to your family and friends. He always felt that you truly walked with him through all of his life adventures with the strength of no other woman he knew.

We are so blessed to have had Luccio in our lives. He by far has not only made this world a better, happier place since 1935, but he made me the person I am today. Without you and Papi I would not be as happy, loving and generous. Papaeddu, mi manchi da morire, ma so che sei in cielo con I nonni, I tuoi figli, Settineddu, Zio Enrico, Padre Pio, Madre Teresa e tanti altri. Daddy, I miss you a ton, but I know that you are up in heaven watching over us all.

Dad has a million attributes. Here are a few:

L = Loving LEONE toward all who met him.
U = Ultimate Husband, Nonno, Daddy, Zio, Brother, Son, Cousin, Friend, Patient and Colleague.
C = Charismatic and Charming. Combatente (never gave up). Epitome of Vincero’.
C = Caring, Comedian (he could tell a joke like no other), Kind and Selfless.
I = Incredible Chef, Artist/Marble Sculptor (La Zec), Builder (Shangrila, Penelope, Acapulco, Villa Cristina, Nonni’s home, Zio Pino/ Zia Pia’s home).
O = Outstanding Faith, Love, Generosity with all family and friends.

Z = Zest for life. Sylvia & Luccio parties are renowned by all!
A = Altruistic (truly finds joy when others are happy)
P = number one Papa’
P = Positive attitude
O = O Sole Mio, Volare…no one could sing like Luccio.
L = Marca Liotru
I = Innovative; Visionary.

My Papi Luccio was a very dedicated father. He would watch me so closely that even if my poopie diapers had a strange color he was calling the doctor to make sure I was ok. If that wasn't enough he bought a chicken so he knew what it ate and felt comfortable about the eggs it laid for me to eat. As I grew up he continued to be devoted to all of my athletic events. For years I ran track. I ran long distance the 5000 meter race (5 k). I always completed the race but never placed. My last year, I was running with the front of the pack the entire race. The girls from Naples won most races and I was running with them. Wow! Neck and neck the entire race, the last lap I passed them. My father was so excited that he started running with me in the center of the Track telling me " Dai, Dai Cristina, che cela fai" Go, go you can do it! At a 100 m from the finish I hit a wall. My dad yelled to encourage me to keep going. I came in 3rd or 4th. My Papa’ greeted me and assisted as he always did with a big Luccio smile.

In 1997 when I was accepted to the OHSU PA program, we met Dr. Brian Druker who is a miracle and instrumental in extending Dad’s quality of life with his medication Gleevec.

He was so thrilled when I married Curt and had a beautiful son Vincent. The love of a grandchild was the ultimate love Luccio had ever experienced. He would call and check in daily. He would leave me a message saying in English, "This is your favorite Daddy. Cristinedda, please call me. Come sta il mio Vincenzino. E’ un bambino meraviglioso. E’ un angelo.” When we would sit and have coversations over un espresso, he would say “Guardalo sempre a Vincenzino. Questo bambino ti portera’ tanta felicita’. Io non posso vivere per sempre, ma non ti preoccupare, no vi lascero’ mai. Tu poi melo racconterai. Vieni da me, ti siedi e’ mi racconti tutto.”

Papi's spirit is absolutely palpable in Sicily. Luccio really made this world a better place! Wherever we go in Catania, if you say "do you know Luccio Zappoli", faces light up and no one can do enough for you. His charisma and kindness make any one feel at home immediately. His warmth, generosity, love, sense of humor, conversation, artistic talent, cooking, selflessness, pragmatic ways are what make my father my hero. Thank you Mom for marrying such a fine man!

I love you! Ti Amo.
Your daughter Cristina, favorite son in law Curtis and grandson Vincenzino

I only met Luccio a few times but I will always remember how much he lit up a room with his warm smile, kind heart and loving personality. Luccio touched many lives and will never be forgotten.

I FIRST MET LUCCIO APPROXIMATELY 1962 IN SEATTLE. HE WAS ALWAYS ENTHUSIASTIC, FUN LOVING AND HAD A SPARKLE THAT WAS INFECTIVE. HIS ENTHUSIASM FOR LIVING KNEW NO BOUNDS. LUCCIO HAD A CAPACITY FOR MAKING YOU WELCOME AND WANTED. HE ENRICHED THE LIVES OF OTHERS. I REMEMBER HIM TELLING ME " I LIKE PEOPLE" . HE PROJECTED THIS LIKE A RAY OF SUNSHINE.

"THOSE WHO BRING SUNSHINE INTO THE LIVES OF OTHERS CANNOT KEEP IT FOR THEMSELVES"

I WAS PRIVELEGED TO HAVE LUCCIO AS A FRIEND. MISS YOU, SEE YOU SOON LUCCIO

Sylvia, Cristina...
I first knew you and Luccio when I became a renter at the newly completed "Villa Cristina" in Ognina in 1968. From then on you and Luccio became the focal point of everything to do with fun and family at Sigonella. You guys were our cheer leaders and really set the tone of the social climate for the whole base.
You hosted an engagement party for Pina and me and were at our wedding. I recall Luccio's story of your teaching him to say "How's your belly button?" when he was learning english. We still have the marble table top you gave us as a wedding present. Seeing it always invokes fond memories of Luccio's engaging personality and always present broad smile.
Over the years Sigonella became a distant memory, but the days at Villa Cristina and Sigonella with you and Luccio will always be among our fondest memories. We are grateful that we were able to visit with you both a couple of years ago at the Norfolk Sigonella reunion.
Luccio may be gone in body, but not his indominatble spirit. His strength and courage were amazing! He will always be an inspiration for all. God Bless!

When I asked if you had an apartment to rent, you did not. But guess what? Your father in law did. That was the start of my happy memories with the Zappolis which have lasted all during the past 35 years. We shared great laughs and that is what I will always remember. We have all lost a great friend.

Luccio was a wonderful, kind, generous, great cook, and fun loving man. I feel honored to have known him. I have great memories of all of us together in Sicily! Perhaps "they" are together now raising their wine glasses! I hope to be able to see you in the future.

A more generous, loving, spirited, kind-hearted, full-of-life person such as Luccio comes along once in a great while. Those that knew him can console themselves in knowing that they were in the company of a truly special person of which we see not often enough in this world. Rest in peace my friend, give a big hug to Enrico, Mama and Papa, and have some pasta carbonara waiting when it's my turn to cross over! Ciccio

Luccio could light up a room and he could fill the hallway of their condo building in Seattle with the wonderful aromas of his cooking. We could always tell when Luccio and Sylvia were back from Sicily. "Mmmm...They're back." It always smelled so good and we are lucky to be their next door neighbors. He was so generous of spirit and he will really be missed.

Sylvia, you and Luccio will always be part of my life. I remember visiting Mom and Dad in Sicily in the 60's during my summer breaks from college. We had so many wonderful dinners at your place overlooking the beautiful Mediterranean and up at the mountain house. Luccio prepared such delicious things for us on the BBQ... marinated prawns, roasted peppers, slowly smoked artichokes. Then there was always the frozen fruit in our wine keeping it cool. Mom and Dad still do that today having learned it from Luccio. I still use his recipes in my cooking and think of him every time I try to duplicate his special dishes. I remember one time Lucccio was frying up some bacon and onions to make a pasta sauce and Mom, who was always learning new recipes from Luccio, asked him what he was preparing. He just smiled and said "lunch". But when Mom persisted and asked if it was a special old family recipe, he grinned and said, No, Kay, I read it on the pasta box!"

Luccio was always so fresh and funny, making every one feel loved and special. He had the gift of joy, which he spread around so freely. When two years later I married in Sicily, Luccio was asked to be Best Man (which we all knew that he was) and you were my Matron of Honor. Even Christine was at my wedding before her birth! Then there was my sister's wedding in Naples a few years later when your whole family came up from Sicily to be with us for that great day...

And the last time that I got to see you both was at Mom and Dad's 60th Anniversary party here in Arizona a few years ago. It meant so much to us that you both were able to be at their party.

So even though we have not seen you both very much over the years, we have always kept in touch at Xmas with our newsletters and it is as if we had never been apart. Luccio and you, Sylvia, will always be in my heart.

Dear Sylvia, Christina, Curt, Vincent, Zappoli family and friends,

An angel in our midst has spread his wings, slipped the surly bonds of earth, and ascended from our fold. And yet, we will hold his memory deep within our hearts and minds. When I recall my time and visits in Sicily, I always fondly reminisce my time with you, Luccio and the family at those Sunday gatherings. Luccio's humor and gregarious manner was an unforgetable experience. He lived life to the fullest. And when Nancy and I came to Sicily, you were a most gracious host during our visit. Luccio will be sorely missed. I feel I am a better person for having known him. Our sympathies, hearts and prayers are extended to each of you.

Dear Sylvia, Cristina,Curt and Vincent,

It was such a joy and honor to have known Luccio. He filled our hearts with happiness and laughter during our get-togethers. Sylvia and Luccio were our hosts and "sponsors" during our sojourn in Sicily which made it a unique and immensely enjoyable experience. His laugh, earthy humor, smile and welcoming manner are unforgettable. He shared food, wine and special recipes with us - even a special limoncello brewing party. We'll always remember our last luncheon with him and Sylvia at Cristina's before they left for Catania - so happy and full of life to the end.

Dear Sylvia and Cristina,
Words cannot express to you the sadness I felt when I heard of Luccio's passing. You are so blessed to have had someone like him in your lives. Not all of us are as fortunate. Luccio is all around my home. The marble he helped me select for my tables, the beautiful portraits and table frame from Pippo Failla. Sylvia, I hope you and Chrisina know how much you are both loved and how much I loved Luccio also. What a wonderful experience having you as "family" during the seven years I lived in AciTrezza. Memories that will remain with me forever. I know Luccio wanted to come to my wedding in Dec and although he want be there physically I know he will be in spirit giving the bride a kiss and a dance.I know he would like Frank especially since his background is Sicilian.I will be thinking of you Sat.and wish I could be there for his memorial.
