Curtis Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2026.
Abilene - Curtis Dewain Baker, aged 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2026, at his residence in Abilene, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 22, 1947, in Santa Anna, Texas, Curtis's journey was marked by dedication, joy, and an unwavering love for his family.

A proud graduate of Coleman High School in 1965, Curtis pursued a career dedicated to public service. Over the span of 35 years, he served as a DPS Trooper, beginning his work in Crystal City and Brownwood. His dedication to law enforcement continued as he took on a role in Amarillo as a narcotics officer before returning to Abilene, where he continued his commitment to public safety. Curtis was a life-time member of the Texas Narcotic Officers Association.

Curtis was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his vibrant personality. He had a fun, outgoing nature that endeared him to many. His love for life was evident in his passions, which included fishing and hunting, but above all, it was his family that brought him the most joy. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, who were his pride and delight. Curtis coached many sports teams for his kids and grandchildren over the years.

On June 8, 1968, Curtis married Cindye Williams at the Gouldbusk Methodist Church, a milestone that marked the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Together, they raised three daughters: Jamye Killam and her husband David, Jennifer Scott and her husband Danny, and Julye Gonzales and her husband Alfredo. Curtis also raised two of his grandchildren, Alyx Baker and fiancé Greyson Blankley and Victoria Barker and Husband Michael. Curtis's legacy lives on through his beloved grandchildren: Devin Rousseau-Walker and her husband Nate, Beau Rousseau, Alyson Cooper and her husband Josh, Aubrye Scott, Logan Riggs, and Damian Gonzales, as well as eleven great-grandchildren, with one more expected.

He is also survived by his siblings, Cheryl Erskine and Marty Baker and his wife Shana, sister-in-law, Terrye Nanny, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will remember him fondly.

Curtis is preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Franklin "Sammy" Baker and Willie Pearl Farris Baker, whose love and guidance helped shape the man he became.

Curtis Dewain Baker leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and fond memories that will be forever cherished by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2026, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman. Interment will follow in the Gouldbusk Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Davey Erskine, Myles Baker, Chad Grey, Dwinn Nanny, David Nanny, and Bucky Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Arturo Casarez, Alfred Gonzales, Martine Hernandez, Teo Garcia, Jim Greenlee, Alfredo Gonzales, Jr., Frank Cleveland, Billy Schat, Ronnie Stinnett, and Justin Corp.

The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org.
