Curtis Hammill, Sr. Obituary

Curtis J. Hammill, Sr., 96, a longtime resident of the Vernon and Oneida areas, passed away, peacefully, on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany.

Curtis was born on May 13, 1929, in St. Lawrence County, a son of the late George and Elizabeth (Lavine) Hammill. He was a graduate of the Simmons Mortuary Institute in Syracuse and, for many years, he was the owner and operator of the Hammill Funeral Home in Vernon. In addition to his work in funeral service, Curtis also served as a school bus driver for the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill School District.

Curtis was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in Japan as a member of the Body Identification Unit. He was also a life member of the Verona VFW Post #6811.

Curtis joined Freemasonry more than 75 years ago and was raised to the degree of Master Mason in 1951. He served as a past Lodge Master and was a current member of Sconondoa-Sherrill Lodge #814 in Vernon. His commitment to both Masonry and country was evident through his service as a past commander of the Masonic War Veterans.

In addition to his parents, Curtis was predeceased by his son, Curtis J. Hammill, Jr., in 2007; as well as three brothers; and one sister.

He is survived by his beloved wife, of 69 years, Marian (Guyer) Hammill; along with several nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service, with Military Honors, will be held, in the spring, at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vernon, with arrangements to be announced at a later date.

Contributions, in Curtis' memory, may be made to Sconondoa-Sherrill Lodge #814, 5211 West Seneca St., Vernon, NY 13476.
