With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Cyril Chun Fat Chung Jr., affectionately known as "Chungie," whose Sunrise was July 8, 1943, in Honolulu, Territory of Hawai i, and whose Sunset came peacefully at home in Aina Haina on September 25, 2025.
Cyril was the beloved son of Cyril and Violet (Ah San) Chung, and brother to Leonard Chung, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Filomena "Nina" (Badayos) Chung, and their four children: Clayton Keola Chung (Daphne), Carol-Ann Malialani Ota (Kevin), Clare Kaleonahe Chung Sanches, and Corey Kaipo Chung (Vanina).
He was a proud grandfather to Kelsey-Ann and Bailey Ota; Kamron, Karley, and Kobe-Lee Sanches; Caylynn, Calia, and Cade Chung; Kainoa and Kekaiokalani Chung; ChrissyAnn Salinas (Brannon Gouveia); and Keli i Tolentino (Sara Chang). He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Finesity, Avrie, and Tayden Salinas-Gouveia; Janiyah Apolo; Kalawai a and Kaile a Wright-Paredes, Maddie Fukui and Kaia Tolentino.
Cyril was a skilled heavy equipment mechanic whose dedication and craftsmanship led him to open his own repair shop. He was known for his strong work ethic, problem-solving mind, and the pride he took in his trade.
Beyond his profession, Cyril's life was rich with passion and community. He loved spending time with friends and family, traveling, and especially following his sons on Supercross and Motocross adventures. While living in California during the 1990s, he mentored young motocross riders from Hawai i during the summers, sharing his knowledge and encouragement with the next generation. He also coached Little League baseball, continuing his lifelong commitment to youth and sports. A true cowboy at heart, Cyril found joy and peace in being around horses.
Cyril gave back to his community in many ways throughout his life. In the early 1970s, he volunteered extensively at Star of the Sea Church and School, serving on the Parish Council and the Parent-Teacher Group (PTG), and as President of the school carnival. He later coached baseball, football, and basketball in Makakilo, sharing his time and mentorship with local youth. While living on Maui from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, he was an active member of the Maui Roping Club and served as President of the Valley Isle Checkered Flag Association. Under his leadership, the association supported a variety of motorsports, including motocross racing, mud bogging, and demolition derby-furthering his commitment to youth development and the local motorsports community.
Cyril faced life's challenges with resilience and grace. Diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2001, he fought bravely and was later declared cancer-free-a testament to his strength and spirit. He was kind, generous, and deeply rooted in the value of family. He lived by the simple yet profound motto: "Take life as it comes," embracing each day with calm, courage, and gratitude.
He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, humility, and staying close to loved ones. Cyril will be remembered for his warm smile, his unwavering support, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Holy Trinity Church, 5919 Kalanianaole Hwy.,
Honolulu, HI 96821. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m., with Mass to follow at 12:00 noon. All who knew and loved Cyril are welcome to join in honoring his memory.
