D. Alan Dillenberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 22, 2021.
D. Alan Dillenberg III, best known as Alan, entered peacefully into rest on January 22, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with ALS. He was loved and adored by his family and countless friends and colleagues who cherished Alan throughout the years. A strong man with a huge heart, Alan's kindness, generosity and sparkling 1000-watt smile will be missed. Alan was born on May 31, 1951, along with his twin sister Jane, to the late D. Alan "Dilly" Dillenberg Jr. and Sarah Louise David in Chappaqua, New York. After attending Byram Hills High School, in Armonk, NY Alan received a BS from Quinnipiac College followed by a Masters in Accounting at Baruch College CUNY in New York City. After college, in his mid 20s, Alan moved to South Florida to live on the water— which always brought him joy. His father taught him about boating and Sundays were dedicated to cruising on the water with his parents. He loved living and simply being on the water. When he wasn't with his family, he was with good friends, like Gunars and Neil, enjoying the 80s life of Ft. Lauderdale. It was there in his early 30s that he met and married the woman who would become the mother of his two greatest joys, Buddy and Montana. In the early 90s, a career opportunity took him to Birmingham, Alabama where he would begin to raise a family and excel in sales thanks to his outgoing personality and people skills that served him well. Alan always enjoyed the travel his career afforded him and loved hosting booths on the convention hall floor. His people skills meant he never met a stranger! His friend and co-worker Larry Johnson said it best: "Alan was the best embodiment of what a compassionate, loyal, friend and successful sales mentor could be. His interest in all areas of your life was of major importance to him. His contagious appetite and enthusiasm for life was apparent to all and he encouraged all to follow their dreams. My friend will be dearly missed." Alan's heart of gold is what made him so special. Alan's longtime friend Gunars Mansons echoed what many people shared, "Alan always dedicated time to spend with his friends and loved ones. He was a protector – someone who made you feel safe no matter where you were. He was generous and giving, always encouraging others to pursue their dreams." Beyond his career aspirations, Alan was a musician at heart— a passionate blues man who loved the sounds of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Janis Joplin and blues music. He was rarely without one of his Martin guitars, always strumming his favorite tunes. Alan's passions were greatly influenced by his father. An avid amateur race car driver, Alan's dad had a deep passion for music and cars that was passed on to Alan. Clearly that apple didn't fall far from the tree, since his son Buddy has the same need for speed and love of cars. Alan was a long-time member of the Team Corvette Alabama and MOBINC – Men of Birmingham in Nice Cars! Enamored with cars, motorcycles and driving fast, Alan spent a lot of time at the Barber Motorsports Park perfecting his skills and may have outrun a cop or three over the years. Montana summed up her dad's legacy best: "I think Dad made everyone feel heard. He was the best listener. But he didn't just lend an ear, he was able to make people feel cared for, loved. He always stressed the importance of looking for the best in people which is probably why he was so genuine in all of his friendships and why he had so many friends." A proud and gracious father, he is survived by his loving children, daughter Montana Dillenberg of Los Angeles, CA and his son "Buddy" D. Alan Dillenberg IV and Buddy's wife Jordan Dillenberg of Birmingham, AL along with Alan's sister Jane Dillenberg of New York City, NY. Due to COVID, no public services will be held. A Celebration of Life is set for Saturday February 27, 2021 at 12p CT in Birmingham, AL. Those who wish to attend virtually may do so by contacting a family member for more information.

I'll always remember Allan and Bruce Silver riding their BSA 441 cc's( I think) motorcycles together during high school....our shared love of motorcycles, even though I didn't have one drew me into their orbit....so having befriended Allan in high school, I learned a couple of other things about him that I liked....every time I saw Allan, he had a twinkle in his eye and I soon learned there was mischief behind a lot of those twinkles.....it was hard to overlook because he always came out with these great one liners....he wasn't afraid of much....the summer after high school ( I finally bought my own motorbike) I remember Alan and Bruce upgraded....Bruce, I know for sure had a Kawasaki 500, the fastest bike on the road at the time...Alan had, to the best of my recollection, a Triumph 650 Bonneville.....We went out in a group on summer nites and did a little bit of crushing.....after the summer of 1970 I don't recall seeing Allan much, until our 20th class reunion.....it was great, the first thing I said to Alan after greeting each other, Man, Allan you look just like the actor Frank Langello ....we laughed and rehashed old times...Alan and his wife joined my brother Paul and I at our table and we spent the whole reunion hanging out.....well, to make a long story short, seeing Alan was the highlight of my 20th class reunion and my brother felt the same....I know because we talked about how great it was to see him and we both agreed what a good guy he was...I distinctly remember asking Paul, Don't you think Alan looks like the actor, Frank Langello? He said no......I bring this up because although Allan didn't make our 30th Reunion, which bummed me out, he did make our 40th, The thing is, I was overseas at the time and unable to attend.....when I got back, naturally I wanted to know how the reunion went.....
first thing Paul said was Allan was there, what a great guy he was....and Oh yeah, he also said Allan looked like Frank Langello..Rest in Peace, my friend

I will remember Alan for his kindness and passionate love for people. Alan lit up a room with his beautiful, wide smile and infectious love of life. I found myself drawn to interesting stories and advice that he would offer from time to time. He was always very kind to me. I specifically remember his insightful words one morning as he and I happen to be working out at the same time during a family vacation cruise. He reminded me that it was more important to be beautiful and healthy on the INSIDE. I thank God for the blessings and positive impact that Alan has had on so many. He will be missed.

Although it's been awhile since we've seen Alan we still remember the fun times we had with him when we would all get together for family gatherings. Alan always had a big smile, a warm greeting and a nice hug whenever we would see him no matter how long the time in between visits had been. Ray and I know Alan will be missed and always loved by those he left behind.

My deepest condolences for your loss. The stream has returned to the ocean. The last time that I saw Alan was at our high school graduation and remember that he was always a positive and fun loving person. May his journey beyond be filled with many blessings and his goodness continue to shine upon his family. Love from distant Bali, Emerald Starr aka David Charry

Alan was my first cousin, and I'll miss him and his laugh. What I thought was so unique about Alan was that he unabashedly loved his fast cars, motorcycles, lavish vacations, good food, etc. One of our great meals, with his sister, Jane, was at Windows of The World on the top of the World Trade Center shortly before 9/11. He knew what he liked, and wouldn't be side tracked by the more mundane things in life. He did it his way. We should all have such purity of focus, and such an amount of joie de vivre.
RIP, cousin Alan.

I met Alan in August 2011 when we were working on a business deal together. From that meeting we established both a business and friendship relationship. Through the years those relationships grew. We shared great times together. I cherish our friendship. The last time we were together we had lunch at Dreamland in B'ham. It was a great time of sharing together. I will always remember this time as well as others. He was a good friend. He loved his family. Because he and Buddy were together so often he often talked about how proud he was of him. Alan is physically gone but will always be a part of my memories.

* I met Alan one sunny day outside a restaurant in Pelham Alabama. His son Buddy and I both had the same zippy little Volkswagen hatchback and they tracked me down and introduced themselves over lunch. I was immediately impressed with them both. A decade later and we would find ourselves still close as brothers with countless lunches, dinners and car discussions etched in our minds. Alan had such a calming way about him. He was the kind of man that made you feel special and needed. He was the kind of guy that, after spending time with him, would make you call your dad and tell him you love him. I remember one day down in his garage we were just standing there admiring a red Corvette ZR1. It looked new. I asked him why he rarely took it out and he told me it made the drive more special when he did decide to drive it. He was right and that's how it was being around him. Sometimes I wouldn't see Alan for months because of work or whatever but when I did see him I'd always ask myself why I waited so long. I'm going to miss you. Thank you for being my friend.

I had the honor and privilege of being Alans private caregiver for the last year and a half. I knew from day one that he was going to be very easy to love. That absolutely turned out to be the case. He became my friend and even more so one of my own. I will always remember the laughs and smiles, going out to eat and enjoying movies, and playing lots of fun games. I was always so impressed by his eye hand coordination. He was better at ping-pong and playing catch than anyone ever could have imagined.Everyone in the facilities that he lived in loved him and would go out of their way to say hello especially the ladiesI got to witness how caring he was and always looking out for others. If he noticed that one of the other residents needed help with something he would look at me and then point to make sure I helped them. He was truly blessed to have such an amazing family. Buddy, Montana, Jordan, and Tracy. Each of you made sure that he had the very best life possible. Alan will always have a special place in my heart.

I love how Alan never lost his child-like excitement and enthusiasm like so many adults do. Has anyone else witnessed that glint in his eye when he leans over and says this or that sure is nice!? I'm sad for myself that it'll be a while before I see hi

I'm sad for myself that it'll be a while before I see him again, but I'm really happy for him that he's back to being his old self.

Photos of his beloved 911 being delivered are attached. It wasn't a coincidence that he wore a yellow shirt that day (to match the calipers!).

Alan, it is so nice, I love it! Let's go for a ride.

Alan was my boss from 1988-1995. He and Tracy took me into their home and circle of trust. In the basement we trained together with heavy weights; to this day a shoulder injury I sustained using Alan's supine fly contraption pains me, thus Alan has not left my mind not for a single day :-) but that isn't the only reason. I love the man. He came to my wedding. I don't forget anyone who was ever good to me, treated me with kindness, respect and trust. I can recall with crystalline clarity the times we spent together at his house on the big rock; can still hear him playing Tears in Heaven on the guitar. Recall his stories of seeing Jimi Hendrix in concert, and having singer Laura Brannigan riding on the back of his motorcycle. Can see him polishing his Corvette. He and Tracy both were just the kindest, nicest sweethearts in a long life of hellos and goodbyes. I never got a chance to say goodbye to either of them as my departure from their work-world happened suddenly, but again, not a day goes by without thinking of them, with great fondness. Godspeed, Alan. No good thing every dies.

It is with deep sadness that I send my condolences to Jane and the rest of Alan's family. Alan was a special friend to me in high school. We dated a little at the end of senior year, and he celebrated my 18th birthday with me. But my most vivid memory was when he drove up on his motorcycle to my parents' house unannounced the day before the 12th grade math final and asked me to go over the whole year with him. I spent five hours reviewing what he didn't know, and I said you better not get a higher mark than me because I've not focused on what I don't know! He got an 81 and I got a 91! He was a character but also a laid-back, funny and handsome guy with a good heart and a great smile. About 10 years ago I was privileged to spend some time reminiscing with him when he came to Armonk. He talked so lovingly about his children and was so proud of them. We also spoke over the phone a couple of times several years later, but he never let on about his health. I was so sorry to learn that he battled ALS. I will always remember Alan smiling. Rest in peace Alan.

Dearest Buddy and Montana,
When I was little, I loved spending the weekends with both of you and your mom and dad. There are so many wonderful memories and adventures we did together! I always thought of your dad as a giant (obviously because I was small) with a great smile! Because of Alan, I understand the appreciation of having nice cars and taking care of them, lol. I know our dads always had great conversations and I take comfort in knowing they are doing that right now and probably having a drink or two. You both carry on your dad's legacy and he could not be more proud. I love you!
