Dale Colby Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 13, 2025.
Dale Arnold Colby passed away peacefully on September 20th, 2025. Born premature in Centralia, Washington on September 10th, 1939, he was the only living child to parents Merla and Arnold Colby.

Dale graduated from Auburn High School in 1959, and was a cameraman and lighting engineer for KOMO TV in Seattle for over 35 years. His work, ranging from Mount St. Helens eruption footage (taken hanging from a helicopter), to Monday Night Football, and Northwest Afternoon, has been seen by many.

He served 9 years in the National Guard. Dale was a Boy Scout Leader who enjoyed the outdoors deeply. He climbed Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens (before the eruption) with some of the scouts, including his two sons. As a scout leader he was recognized with three 50-miler awards. He loved teaching people about preserving nature and always leaving the outdoors better than you found it.

Dale enjoyed photography his entire life capturing nature, the Seattle skyline, and loved ones. He was a wonderful storyteller who had an infectious personality. He was a thrill seeker who bungee jumped, skied as much as he could, flew an ultralight plane, and had even been on the top of the Space Needle.

A devoted husband for almost 58 years to his surviving wife Carmen, his love for her was undeniable and felt by all. He is predeceased in death by one child. He is survived by five children, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Dale will deeply be missed and remembered fondly by those who knew him.
