Dale Herthel Obituary

Dale Edward Herthel, 96, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, February 7, 2022, at his home.

He was born August 9, 1925, in Shelbyville, the son of Wilbur A. and Mary "Katheryn" (Gue) Herthel. On June 23, 1957, he married Miriam A. Eberhart, and she preceded him in death on May 9, 1982.

Dale is survived by his son, Phil Herthel of Shelbyville.

In addition to Miriam, Dale was preceded in death by his parents.

Dale graduated in 1943 from Shelbyville High School, and attended Purdue University from 1946 to 1947.

He owned and operated a trucking business from 1947 to 1953. In 1972, he retired from Amoco Oil Co, where he worked in Marketing Management for 20 years. From 1972 to 1979, he was a broker for Herthel-VanNatta Real Estate and later Riverwood Realty. He also farmed the family farm from 1962 to 1988.

Dale was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, serving during World War II, as a crewman and flight engineer on a B-29.

He was a member of Morristown Masonic Lodge, where he was a Past Master; Morristown Eastern Star, where he was a Past Patron;. He was a member of Shelbyville York Rite, where he held numerous offices. He was a member of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite, where he received the Meritorius Service Award in 2010. He was also a member of Murat Shrine, and at the time of his death, was the oldest living past president of the Shelby County Shrine Club.

Dale served on many boards in Shelby County including: Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, Shelby County Extension Board, ten years on the Shelbyville Central School Board, six years on the Blue River Vocational Board, Shelby County Tax Adjustment Board, Marion Township Advisory Board, and Shelby County Farm Bureau.

He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and camping in his RV.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2022, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville, with the Masonic service at 7:30 pm.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the funeral home, with Rev. Cleon Wright officiating.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. Military graveside services will be conducted by the local military committee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Scottish Rite Cathedral Foundation. A basket will be available at the visitation for contributions, or they can be made online through the Indianapolis Scottish Rite Valley website.

Sure miss you dale the few times I got to eat with you at Waffle House

I had the pleasure of eating with dale with Brian Mitchell a few time s. I´ll miss the Random breakfast at Waffle House and Cracker Barrel. I did not know dale personally but what I did know of him I´m glad I got to experience. my heart and prayers are with the family

I never met Dale in person but I know my cousin Brian sure thought the world of him. He helped Brian so much after his dad(my uncle Everett) passed away. He was an honorable man and was looked up to by so many. I know how much he is going to be missed!

We all loved your dad and always appreciated his grace and mercy towards us. We can never repay you for all you , yourself did for us. We pray you will have peace and comfort during the great loss of your dad.
