Dale Smythe, of
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 with his loving wife of 58 years beside him. Though his time here feels far too short, Dale's life was full of warmth, faith, and the quiet joys that made each day meaningful.
Born and raised in California, Dale carried with him the sunshine and open spirit of his youth. He found joy in life's simple pleasures, whether that was working through a challenging Sudoku puzzle, diving into the pages of a good book, or enjoying the comfort of his favorite treats. Dale had a sweet tooth for Knott's Berry Farm jams, shortbread cookies, and especially lemon pies-a joy he happily shared with those around him.
Those who knew Dale will remember his love for puzzles-not just the ones on paper, but also the way he approached life's challenges with patience, focus, and determination. He was also a skilled woodworker, creating thoughtful and lasting pieces that his family will treasure for generations. Each handmade piece reflected not only his craftsmanship but also the love and care he poured into everything he did.
Dale's life was a reflection of his faith. The presence of God shone through him in the way he lived, and he shared that faith with others by teaching Sunday school, encouraging young hearts with patience, wisdom, and joy. His compassion extended deeply into his home life as well. Although his mother-in-law passed away over a year ago, his family will always remember the gentleness and patience with which he cared for her in her final years-an example of selfless love that spoke more than words ever could.
Dale's memory will live on in the laughter of family gatherings, the love of lemon pies, the treasured wooden pieces that grace his family's homes, and in every puzzle completed in his honor.
He is survived by family and friends who will miss him deeply but take comfort in knowing that his spirit rests now with the Lord he served so faithfully.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Randy Rae Urquhart Smythe, one daughter, Heather Mallonee and husband, Richard of Manchester, MD, one son, Mark Smythe and wife, Christie of Pinehurst, TX, four grandchildren, MacKenzie, Logan, Parker and Harrison, one sister, Leona Myers, two brothers, Scott and Craig Smythe, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Matthew.
A service will be held to celebrate Dale's life, honoring his legacy of faith, resilience, and love on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Reverend Dr. Brian Hotaling officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Bel air Memorial Gardens, 809 Rock Spring Road, Bel Air, MD Dale will be laid to rest alongside his cherished son, united again in God's eternal care.
