Daniel Powell Patrick Baier was born on August 4, 1941, at Women's Hospital in Baltimore. He died on October 7, 2025, after a long struggle with the adverse effects of Primary Progressive Aphasia. Dan is survived by his wife Lenore, their daughter Anne Henslee (Marshall), and grandchildren Eli Henslee and Julia Henslee. Also survived by his sister Maryanne Baier Tiburzi (Paul), his brothers Norman, Cletus (Linda), and Michael (Diane), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Danny grew up in Rosedale, Maryland, in a home with his parents, Norman Vincent Baier and Evelyn Evans Baier, grandparents Daniel Evans and Anna Deuchler Evans, uncle Howard Evans, three brothers and one sister. His fraternal grandparents, John Baier and Catherine Finnerty Baier, lived across the street on Philadelphia Road. Dan was an altar boy at St. Clement Mary Hofbauer Catholic Church. He attended St. Clement Mary Hofbauer School, the old Calvert Hall College High School in downtown Baltimore, and Villanova University.
Danny Played basketball and baseball in grammar school. At Calvert Hall he lettered in basketball and baseball and maintained his grades in the Academic Program. During the summer, he played baseball for Leone's and participated in the AAABA (All American Amateur Baseball Association) tournament in Johnstown, PA. In 1959, Leone's won: and Dan was selected as Most Valuable Player. He received a baseball scholarship, attended Villanova University and played until he signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He spent summers with the Orioles until he graduated from Villanova with a degree in business. He played on four Oriole minor league teams (Bluefield, Minot, Aberdeen, Stockton).
While attending Villanova, Dan met Beryl Cox who was attending a junior college in Philadelphia. They married in 1967. During that time, he served six years in the National Guard. After several injuries, Dan quit baseball and went to work at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's plant at Sparrows Point, Maryland. He began as an operations supervisor and finalized his career as a supervisor in the Coke Ovens Department. He retired after 30 years.
Dan traveled to Europe, visiting major cities with his wife, a buyer at Hutzler's Department Store. She died in 1983. He married Lenore Lucas Friedlander in 1992. They were married until his death.
Dan and Lenore continued to travel, once to Paris but mostly in North America. He loved beaches, the Orioles, and the Ravens. He enjoyed fine food, loved his dogs, his family, and was a loyal friend. He maintained contact with teammates and classmates for many years. A celebration of life is planned for December.
