In a YouTube conversation with Prof. Robert Service on the subject of Trotsky, Christopher Hitchens referred to "the great Daniel Bell". So right!! The subject was the desperate mutiny at Kronstadt a few years after the Russian Revolution, by all reckoning a monstrous betrayal by the Bolsheviks in power. In later years, people who were slow to realize the real nature of the revolution used to refer to some subsequent atrocity as their moment of disillusionment, of their "Kronstadt". Hitchens noted, with enormous approval, that Daniel Bell said that HIS "Kronstadt" was Kronstadt! As always, Prof. Bell was way ahead of the pack

Dear David and Jordy,
I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to you on the passing of your Dad, Daniel. He was a great man who had a lot to say and said it well.
We (the two of you and your Dad), met together in 1968 or 1969 in Jerusalem. I believe that you, David, came by my school, the American College in Jerusalem. We met and hung out a bit. Once I learned that your Dad was Daniel Bell, I asked if you would bring me to meet him at your hotel - the King David. I had just read one of Daniel's books - it read like a brilliant novel - when I told your Dad this, he beamed!
Your Dad also new my father, the economist, Ben B. Seligman.
My name (was) Bob Seligman. I say "was", as in 1980 I returned to Israel on aliya and in 1984, shortly after declaring my citizenship I changed my name to Rafael Mevorach.
Please write, when you can, to: [email protected].
