Stacey and family,

Thinking of you in this time of sorrow and hoping you find comfort in warm memories.

Oh My! I cannot even begin to express how Dan and the whole family made me feel when I lived in Mt. P andworked for them. I still tell people how amazing it is that Dan would remember your name, your spouses name and who you hung out with even after many years and not seeing him for a time. He always said (as recently as last summer) that he wanted to bring his family out here for a visit. Please know that the door is open and you are welcome to be here any time. My very deepest sympathies to all of you, Dan was a very unique individual and a significant part in many lives over the years...just as The Bird. Many hugs and prayers come your way today from the Rocky Mountains.

To the Breidenstein Family:

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. The Bird was a warm, wonderful place for us during college and Dan's kind, generous heart and easy smile was a big part of that warmth and comfort. My husband and I met at the Bird and this year will be our 5th anniversary. Please know that Dan's fatherly regard and the family at the Bird left an indelible mark on many of those college kids and we will carry his memory with us always. We're so sorry for your loss.

To Dan's Family, Employees, Friends, and Acquantances:

What a great loss we have all suffered. It's hard to even put into words how I, and probably many, feel. Dan was a great man! He will always be remembered, though differently by each of us. If you saw him, either in the bar or on the street, you were sure of a howdy - how ya doing? He was such a giving and friendly man. I'm fortunate to have known Dan and will, as will others, miss him dearly and will never forget him.

Thanks, Dan, for the different memories you gave to each of us....

I notice that the words genuine, kind, giving, and honest are repeated by many people in the entrys in this book. There are so many more words to describe Dan; compassionate, happy, devoted, and loving are just a few more. Many people deserve some of these descriptive terms, but only a few truly deserve every one of them. Dan was such a person and will be missed by more people than we will ever know. Mt. Pleasant will be a much different place without Dan.

To the Breidenstein Family:

Please accept my deepest sympathies for you at this time in your lives.

I struggle to find words to fit my thoughts right now. I cannot imagine the depth of your sorrow at the loss of Dan.

I admired and respected Dan for many reasons, but I most admired his sense of family because it included everyone he ever met. Until I met Dan, I never had the privilege to know someone so genuine. I know that he loved you all with his entire being.

Know that you have many, many friends who share your loss. You are all in my thoughts,

Breidenstein Family:

I looked up to Dan as a leader, a man who spoke of his employees as if they were his very own children, and who spoke of his family with love and pride. I will remember Dan as a man who made a difference, he was a worker. Everyone I have spoken to tells me a different wonderful story of how they knew Dan, and I have not heard the same story twice, so I know he was involved in many things, and admired by many people. He will be missed by the entire community. I have prayed for Dan and your family, he is in the Lord's Hands now, of that I am sure.

I first met Dan when I was working for MMI as a job coach, working the downtown crew. Dan and I met while planting flowers one day. He just began talking to me. I knew then that this was a good and decent man. He would often invite the crew and me to come over to Steiner's for a free drink when the weather was so hot out. He would always speak in passing. Dan made us feel welcome to the downtown area. He was a man who was loved by many, and he will surely be missed. But we know his legacy will live on, thru his family, friends, his work. Dan, we will miss u. T.

To the Breidenstein Family:

My deepest sympathy goes out to you for your loss. His loss will be felt by everyone who knew him. I spent alot of time at The Bird during my college hey-days and for alumni reunion parties during Homecoming. Although I didn't know Dan very well, he was friendly and made you feel at home. He will truly be missed.

When I was a boy, I used to meander across the street and down Mulberry Lane to visit Dan. He was still in high school at the time and about 10 years older than I was. He would always invite me into his house and give me pop and candy. He would always engage in friendly conversation and let me stay as long as I wanted. His kindness was genuine and he always treated me like an equal even though I was much younger. At the time, I thought I hit the jackpot getting pop and candy. As I grew older, I realized I hit the jackpot knowing Dan.

Notice how many times I used the word ‘always’ describing Dan. That is because he was consistently kind and genuine. Kindness permeated the mans body and anyone who knew Dan knows what I’m talking about. He was truly a great man and I am forever indebted to him for the impressions he made on me as a young boy.

Thank you neighbor.

July 9, 2002

To the Breidenstein family,

I met Dan, like so many, as a college student back in the 80's, and our paths crossed many times since then, including at Isabella Bank - a walk-up customer at the drive-thru window who had to finish his story no matter how inclement the weather.

I saw him at Summerfest, and even though he looked hot and haggard, he had that signature smile on his face and the impetus to ask us if we were having a good time.

For a 40-something, he had the accomplishments of someone in their 80's. How proud you must be of your patriarch.

I think Mt. Pleasant should fund a bronze statue of Dan and place it outside the two businesses as a lasting tribute. With a smile and a wave pose, of course.

Our sincere condolences to you all.

Patty and Max Strong and family.

Lois and Family My memories of Dan are centered around the Energy & Summer Fests.where I enjoyed working with him. He always had a smile on his face. The picture that I will see is of Dan and Rachael interviewing the "crowd" at the 2002 Summerfest. They were having such a good time and making us all smile. My heart and prayers go out to you. Life has always seemed to like a plant that lives on its rhizome.

Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The part that

appears above ground lasts only a single summer. Then it withers

away--an ephemeral apparition.

When we think of the unending growth

and decay of life and civilization, we cannot escape the impression

of absolute millity. Yet we have never lost a sense of something that

lives and endures underneath the eternal flux. What we see is the

blossom, which passes. The rhizome remains.

Just as the blossom passes, so must we all, but we live forever in

the hearts of those who loved us.

Dan will live forever in so many lives. His legacy will continue through his wife, children, grandchildren, his family, his friends and in the lives of so many people he touched that probably never knew the name of the man who gave so much to so many.

Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers during this time and all times.

Love, The Maybees

Dan was thoughtful of others. I remember Dan calling me at 5:15 a.m. in the morning to let me know the building next to mine was in fire in Downtown Mount Pleasant. At a time like that, Dan might have been concerned just for his own building, but he wasn't. He was thoughful of others.
