Daniel Deane Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 29, 2025.
Daniel J. Deane, age 69, died peacefully Sunday September 21, 2025 at home, surrounded by his wife and children.

Born September 19, 1956, in Detroit, MI, he was the son of Joseph and Barbara Deane, raised alongside three brothers and three sisters. Daniel spent his childhood in Grosse Ile, MI and attended Assumption High School in Windsor, Canada.

Following his graduation from Michigan State University in 1978, Daniel joined his father and brothers in the management of Nicholson Terminal and Dock Co., a family business in operation since 1928. Daniel became President of Nicholson Terminal in 1990 and served as a dedicated owner and steward, alongside his brothers, for the next 35 years, demonstrating a strong commitment to his employees and the city of Detroit.

Daniel was a member of the Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers and the International Stevedoring Council, served on the boards of Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber and Universal Logistics Holdings, and is a former president of Port of Detroit Operations Society & Grosse Pointe Hockey Association.

Daniel was defined by the unwavering commitment he demonstrated to his family and friends. Daniel was a constant, resolute presence in each of his children's lives and was often found behind the bench coaching or meaningfully involving himself in the community as they grew. As his family expanded to include grandchildren, so did Daniel's passion for supporting his family. Daniel maintained meaningful, life-long friendships from his time at Camp de Sales, Assumption High-School, Michigan State University & Nicholson Terminal, a testament to his character and his dedication to friends. He deeply cherished his friends and his entire family.

Daniel is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Denise Deane, children Erin Deane (Zack Crisan), Ryan Deane (Kaitlin), and Rory Deane (Michaela), and five beloved grandchildren. He was raised alongside three brothers, Tom, Bill, & Brendan and three sisters, Anne, Mary, & Genevieve.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday October 10th at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Rd., Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Family will greet guests beginning at 9:30am
