Daniel Dearinger Obituary

DANIEL LEE DEARINGER
August 11, 1947 ˜ July 2, 2023

Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, uncle, brother, teacher, and coach passed away on July 2. We can’t even count the thousands of students, staff, parents, baseball and football players he influenced over his 39 years of teaching and coaching in the Vancouver School District. He was not just successful; he was ’significant.’ Once you met Big D, your life would never be the same. He had high expectations for his students and players and wasn’t afraid to push them to ’step up to the plate’ in the classroom, on the playing field, and in life.
Born in Vancouver, WA, on Aug. 11, 1947 to Asa and Celia Dearinger, he was outnumbered by his three sisters; Dona Stringfellow, Cheryl Hancuff (Roger) and Jane Hutchinson (David). He found his love of sports (especially baseball) at a young age while attending Washington Elementary, then Lewis Junior High and Hudson’s Bay High School. He played both football and baseball throughout his school years, but also used his great voice and acting skills to take part in school musicals. He was the male lead in both Music Man and South Pacific back in 1964 and 1965. After college, he made his home back here in Vancouver and used that beautiful voice to praise The Lord in our church choirs. He especially loved performing in the traditional Christmas cantatas.
Dan earned his BA in Education at WWU in 1969 and then his MA from Lewis & Clark College in 1971. He taught Washington State History at MacHi and then CWP and World Geography and History at Fort Vancouver High. He coached football as a Pioneer and a Trapper. He also umpired baseball games for church leagues and Southwest Washington WIAA. Perhaps the highlight of his career was his coaching job for Babe Ruth Little League. He helped coach his own sons to a 15-year-old World Championship in 1994.
Dan was married to Ruth Moises from 1968 to 1976 and then to Glenda Schweigert from 1977 to the present. He was a devoted dad who enjoyed life to its fullest with his three sons; Jason, Bryan and Ryan. He led the way on numerous trips to Disneyland, national museums and historical landmarks. He loved going overboard playing Santa at Christmastime. As our family grew to include seven grandsons and one granddaughter, he was bursting with pride.
After retirement, his best days were spent buying equipment for, and supporting our sons as they took on coaching roles with our grandsons. He had a special place in his heart for our granddaughter, who is at her happiest performing in musicals just like Grandpa.
A celebration of Big D’s life will be held on Sunday, July 23, at 2 p.m. at Providence Academy Chapel and ballroom, 500 East Evergreen Blvd., #105, Vancouver, WA. As per Dan’s request and due to his love of teaching and his grandkids, in lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Sherwood High School Theater Program, the Portland Baseball Club and Willamette Valley Babe Ruth. The websites will be posted on Facebook and at the celebration.

Thinking of Mr. Dearinger and his family today - he was an amazing man that had a significant impact on my life. I lived on my own my entire senior year, barely graduated because of all the responsibilities I had. He gave me so much support, he could have failed me but worked with me to ensure I graduated. Not many were there for me, he was one of very few. Anyone that knew him was blessed by him.

Dan would be happy to know that we will miss his memorial because we are traveling to Arizona to watch the son of our son who played for Dan in that memorable World Series in Pine Bluff where Bryan´s squeeze bunt won the series for us. I cannot begin to explain the joy those 3 years gave us and the wonderful memories we have carried forward all these years. Dan´s knowledge of the game and evenings talking about history will forever be with us. We will always remember Dan´s enthusiasm for life

God bless you Coach Dearinger now and forever!
You coached the importance of character and hard work as more important than just winning the game. You and Coach Gary Boggs (may he also RIP) were a dynamic force for Trapper Football! Thank you Coach Dearinger!

I had the privilege of being in Mr Dearingers class at Mac Hi between `75-`77. He was a wonderful teacher and though I was not an athlete I was well aware that he was highly respected as a coach. I was also taught by Miss Schweigert, also an excellent teacher. I´m so happy to see they shared many years together and have a loving family. My heartfelt condolences to Glenda and the Dearinger family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Dearinger was my favorite teacher at Fort Vancouver, class of 91'! I lived on my own my senior year, he really helped me get through it and supported me in so many ways. I wish I would have let him know how much he did for me but I am so happy to see he touched many and lived a very full life. You are blessed to have had him in your life!

Not only was Dan (Mr. Dearinger) one of my teachers at Mac Hi, but his sons are now my son Adam´s best friends- from playing baseball together in Babe Ruth, to sharing an apt.at Tacoma Community College where Adam and Ryan played on the team there. Bryan, Ryan and Adam are to this day avid sports fanatics and best of friends. I recall fondly sharing the stadium bench at baseball games with Glenda, and later in life seeing Dan, Glenda and the whole gang at the historical museum where they were celebrating the book Ryan had written ( The Filth of Progress). Dan was indeed a proud father, and also one of Adam´s favorite teachers at Fort Vancouver class of `98. We will miss him.

So sorry to hear of Danny´s passing. We attended Washington Elementary together and both loved sports. Following elementary school we competed against one another since I went to Shumway,Covington jr high and FVHS! He was a very good pitcher and a tough competitor! Really enjoyed knowing him. RIP Danny!!!

Dan and Glenda were both my teachers at Mac. They had a tremendous impact on my life and the lives of my younger siblings. They were more than just teachers....they were friends. Mr. D gave me the nickname of "Mother" and that stuck with me for many, many years. Anytime I saw him that's what he called me. To this day it still makes me smile. Lots of love and concern to your family.
