Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home - FreeportDaniel Karl Hepler, 66, of Freeport Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep early March 13, 2026.
Dan, born on September 25, 1959 in Tucson Arizona, was the son of Karl and Joan Hepler. He grew up in Freeport Illinois with his three brothers, Mark, Steve, and David. Dan graduated from Freeport High School in 1977.
Dan served his country in the United States Navy from May 1980 to July 1996. During his service he was stationed in numerous locations along the East Coast, including bases in Florida, New York, South Carolina, and Connecticut. Dan did multiple 3-month tours on-board different submarines during his career. Later in his career he became an instructor on base, teaching future submariners.
Over his life, Dan was a jack of all trades. His career path ranging from Loan Officer to Car Salesman to Carpenter. He had spent the last several years of his life as the Delivery Manager of Cimino’s Pizza in Freeport, Illinois.
Dan was a forever fan of the Chicago Bears. He loved working with his hands and tinkering with vehicles. He loved music and would happily sing whenever a microphone was available; able to turn any karaoke night into an event. He was a gregarious soul who brought warmth and wit to any gathering; he just loved being around other people and sharing a laugh.
He is survived by his three sons Ryan (Janae) of Clive, IA, Aaron (Carmen) of Waukee, IA, and Brock (Victoria) of Phelps, NY; grandchildren Elyse, Libby, Cora, Joe, Joshua, Eli, Isaac, Cooper, and Oliver; and his sweet dog Delilah.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Joan, and his brother David.
Visitation will be held Saturday 3/21 1:00pm – 3:00pm at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Funeral services will also be held at Burke-Tubbs immediately succeeding the visitation at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Dan's memory.
