Daniel Medina Hernandez, 78, of Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on January 3, 1947, in Moca, Puerto Rico, Daniel was the youngest of six children of Ernesta Medina and Confesor Hernandez. Affectionately known as "Peco" - short for Pequeño, the little one - he was the baby of the family, but quickly became its caretaker and heart.
In 1954, the Hernandez family moved to New York City, settling in a tenement on Hester Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Adjusting to life in a new country wasn't easy, and Danny often shared stories of those early challenges - including a painful memory of being made to wear a "Dunce Cap" in school. Despite this, he proved to be one of the most intelligent and accomplished people I've known.
Danny attended New York University before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Private E-1, Wireman, during the Vietnam War from November 7, 1966, to October 11, 1968. He returned home with an Honorable Discharge and later earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, though he worked professionally as a Computer Software Specialist at FISA.
A lifelong learner and adventurer, Danny loved to travel, run, and practice yoga. He never married but was deeply devoted to his extended family and wide circle of friends. A proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Danny celebrated his sobriety with strength and humility, receiving his sobriety coin just last year - a moment of immense pride for him and all who loved him.
Daniel was the kindest, most generous, and supportive soul. He always made time to speak, counsel, mentor, and simply show up for those who needed him. He will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his sister, Drucilla Ramos, and his brother, Samuel Hernandez, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Confesor and Ernesta Hernandez, and his brothers Joab, Cayetano, and Julio Hernandez.
A viewing will be held at Schaffer Funeral Home in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on Thursday, May 22nd, from 2 PM to 9 PM. A final service will take place on Friday, May 23rd, beginning at 9 AM, followed by interment at 12:00 PM at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island.
