Daniel Merwin Hitchner, 89, of Alloway Township passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. He was born and raised in the community of Cohansey to the late Daniel D. and N. Mildred Hitchner.
Merwin graduated from Woodstown High School in 1953. He spent two years in the Army based in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma from 1958 to 1960 where he focused on meteorology and sharpshooter training. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to Cohansey and became self employed as a carpenter. Upon retiring from his carpentry business, Merwin started working for Pole Tavern Equipment where he delivered John Deere parts for 14 years before full retirement.
Merwin was an avid reader of World War II history and enjoyed stamp collecting and jigsaw puzzles. He also enjoyed attending classic car shows with his nephew Lee.
He is predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jeanette (Evans), his sisters Nellie and Betty Ann Hitchner, his brother Harold Hitchner, his nephew Mark Hitchner and his Great Grandson, Everett Wilson.
Merwin is survived by his children, Kathy Hitchner, Kevin Hitchner and Michael Hitchner and his wife Janeen (Sickler); his grandchildren Sarah Wilson (Dustin) and Allison Evans (Ben); Great Granddaughter Maggie Raye Evans; sister-in-law Lois (Foster) Hitchner, brother-in-law and his wife, Leonard and Judi (Simons) Evans, nephews and nieces Lee Hitchner (Karen), Larry Hitchner (Nicole), Les Hitchner, Leonard Evans, Jr., Elaine LeCates (Randy) and Heather Morrissey (John); as well as several cousins and great nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of Merwin's life on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2024 at 11 AM in the Pavilion at the Pittsgrove Baptist Church, 368 Daretown Road, Elmer, NJ 08318. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations be made in memory of Daniel Merwin Hitchner to the Pittsgrove Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 368 Daretown Road, Elmer, NJ 08318. www.adamsfuneralhome.org
