For several years my friends and I got to visit with him at The Manion Cabin at St Patrick's Park. He would come out on Sundays during the Running Wild race. We would yell to the other ladies, judge is here! It became an expected and enjoyable visit.

I´ve known Dan Manion about as long as I can remember. His father was dean of the Notre Dame Law School, and my father was a professor at the school. They frequently talked after Mass on Sundays at Christ the King Church in South Bend. I remember Dan, his sisters Diana and Marilyn and his brother Chris; along with my brother and sister, we´d talk some as our fathers talked. A few times we visited their property on the St. Joseph River off Laurel Road.

I´d see Dan sometimes when we were in college at Notre Dame. Once, maybe ten years ago, I saw him at Mass at Christ the King when I visited home. Dan was a very pleasant and interesting guy, and I liked him.

I live in Seattle. Once, maybe about 1990, I saw Senator Slade Gorton in the elevator in the Federal Building there. He had been a tie-breaking vote when Dan was confirmed to his judgeship. I didn´t know the senator at all, but I told him that I knew Dan when he was a kid and that I liked him. The senator appreciated that, and it was obvious that he liked him too.

My deepest sympathy to Dan's wife and family.

Ann, our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your entire family during this difficult time. Dan embodied servant leadership. The impact throughout the greater community that you and Dan created over decades is impressive, and the ripple effect will continue for generations to come.

I always looked forward to seeing and talking with Judge Manion at the federal courthouse. A real gentleman. Jim Morrison.
