Daniel Messer Obituary

Daniel Boone Messer, a devoted servant of faith and family, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Born on April 20, 1933, in Haywood County, NC, Daniel’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to ministry, heartfelt service, and a passion for spreading God’s Word.

His career that began as quite an accomplished barber expanded to a total pursuit of his passion to serve in various areas of ministry. A major milestone in his early life was serving as a founding member of the Gideons International Haywood County Camp—a role that set him on a lifelong path of spiritual leadership. His career flourished through involvement with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, where he served as director over the Southeast Region. Daniel’s work in Underground Evangelism touched countless lives and a thousand churches, fueled by his boundless energy, keen intellect, and enduring passion for serving God.

Daniel was also a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War, proudly stationed in Korea during his military service, reflecting his dedication to country as well as his faith.

Known for his warm heart and approachable spirit, Daniel never met a stranger. He was a distinguished gentleman, held in high esteem by all who knew him. He loved music, walking, fishing, and traveling with his beloved wife of 67 years, Elease, who stood by his side through life’s many journeys until her passing in 2023. Care and affection for his grandchildren were among his greatest joys. His generosity of spirit and kindness left an indelible mark on his community.

He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Danna Gibson (Rev. Dr. Gary) of Phenix City, Alabama, and Joy Rathbone (Keith) of Clyde, North Carolina; his cherished seven grandchildren: Jonathan Gibson (Kelley), Dr. Blayke Anerin (Chip), Cassie Higgins (Alex), Joseph Gibson, Amanda Henderson (Andrew), Kaleb Rathbone (Monica), and Rachel Trantham (Tyler); and sixteen adored great-grandchildren: Kayla, Kourtney, Aiden, Julia, Eli, Shep, Sullivan “Sully”, Jacob, Jonathan, Mason, Grant, Reid, Josiah, Abby, Hawk, and Jett, each a testament to Daniel’s enduring legacy of love and faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonathan Philip Messer and Martha Bryant Messer; his dear wife, Elease Messer; and his ten siblings—five brothers and five sisters.

A Celebration of Mr. Messer's life will be held at 12:00 p.m at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Family and friends will gather to honor a life beautifully lived in service to God, love for family, and dedication to faith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Messer's memory to Gideons International at P.O. Box 634, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Daniel Messer’s journey reminds us all of the profound difference one life can make through kindness, devotion, and steadfast belief. His legacy continues in every soul he touched and every heart he inspired. He will be deeply missed and forever treasured.
