Born January 2, 1937, in Darlington County, S.C., Dan was the son of the late Charles Lafayette Odom and Gertrude Williams Odom. He graduated from High Point High School in 1955. He attended Wake Forest University and later graduated from High Point College (now High Point University) in 1960. Dan went on to establish his own successful certified public accounting firm, Odom & Company LLP, in High Point. His dedication to excellence in his profession was matched only by his deep commitment to the community he loved. He retired in 2019.
Dan was a man of great civic spirit. He served as the president of the String & Splinter Club, High Point Civitans, and the High Point Historical Society. He served over a decade as the treasurer of the High Point Community Foundation, for which he received the Spirit of the Foundation Award in 2008. A loyal supporter of his alma mater, Dan was an avid member of the HPU Panther Club and taught accounting early in his career as an adjunct professor. HPU basketball season was always the highlight of his winter season.
A man of faith, Dan was an active member of several High Point churches in his life, including First United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer and usher, and a long-time attendee of the John Willet Men's Bible Study.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles Odom, Jr., Jacqueline Sansbury, Samuel Odom, James Darrell Odom, and Joyce Odom.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Odom, of the home; four children, Karen Elaine Odom of High Point, Daniel R. Odom, Jr. of Ocala, Fla., Jennifer Odom Kallao and husband Chris of Winston-Salem, and Jonathan G. Odom, USN (Ret.), and wife Missy of High Point; five cherished grandchildren, Daniel Odom III, J.V. Hipp II, William Kallao, Margaret Odom, and Jonathan G. Odom, Jr.; and one great-grandson, James Hipp III.
