I was blessed to be one of Dan's guitar students in the 90s. He was also an instructor of mine at SVSU. I still remember things he taught me that long ago - even sat down a few minutes ago to play through "Walk Don't Run" in his honor. Mainly I remember him to be very patient, kind, humble and talented. Just a super nice man. He definitely had a positive impact on me and the course of my life.
I'm glad I had a chance to re-connect with Dan briefly when he helped with a guitar of mine five or so years ago. It made me happy to see him still doing his thing.
Condolences to his family. He made a difference to many for sure.

I am deeply sadden by the loss of my friend Dan Penkala.
I met Dan through an associate songwriter Jim Garrison from Saginaw. Dan and i recorded a few times and the camaraderie we shared was musically productive and outstanding.
I still have the original recordings with me and Dan.
Dan was honored when i called him "Compadre", a spanish word for close friend.
I will miss my compadre and my condolences to his family and his wife Judy.......
He's gone but never forgotten
We miss you..............................

I had the privilege to study guitar with Dan for 12+ years. I met Dan first at SVSU, I studied there and then private lessons at his home. This is where Dan was in his element. I can truly say he was a master guitarist, his skill at composition and arrangement was astonishing. I could barley believe what ease he performed these tasks. Also, he was a master luthier(guitar maker). He worked on several of my guitars as well. Lastly, his quick wit and humbleness was what I enjoyed most about Dan. He will definitely be missed and not forgotten.

Dan was a brilliant guitar arranger, instructor, and a genius luthier. His work was simply world class. Many guitarists were mesmerized by the quality and playablilty of his guitars. He was a mentor to many, including myself, and will be missed.

Dan and I worked together at Whitehead Music from 1971 until the late '80s. He devoted his life to music. He was a dear friend to me and anyone te ran into. I don't think there was anyone who met Dan he didn't care for. God Bless you Dan. Now the Lord hah a full time person to take care of the Lutes and Harps. Thanks for being part of my life.

Judy, Dale and Korey and all who mourn Dan's parting - my prayers are for strength and consolation to you all at this time. Dan was part of my life for the past 29 years. He gave of his talents fully, and the love of music and the guitar are now a part of my life, too. Dan also shared his faith in Jesus our Savior with me, so while we who remain may grieve, let us also draw strength and comfort from God that Dan's soul is forever safe with Him.
