Dan Quilty’s athletic career began as an outstanding varsity basketball player and baseball player at Gorton High School in the 1940s, when he captained two straight City Championships and was selected for the basketball All Westchester Team.
After military service with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific, he elected to attend New York University from a number of scholarship opportunities, and was part of three successful Violet squads, most prominently the 1947-48 team that went to the NIT finals. After graduation, Mr. Quilty began an association with NYU that continued for 49 years as tenured professor, basketball coach, Athletic Department Chairman, Assistant Director of Athletics, culminating in three decades as Director of Athletics and Recreation. He was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Jerome S. Coles Sports and Recreation Center, the successful return to Men’s Varsity Basketball, and expansion of overall Athletic Programs. He was also a prime force in the organization of the University Athletic Association and served as Chairman of the Executive Committee. In addition, he was senior member of the National Invitation Tournament, functioning as Vice President-Treasurer. Mr. Quilty’s long and successful career was recognized by the University in his selection to the New York University Hall of Fame, the dedication of the Daniel E. Quilty Conference Room at the Coles Center, the prestigious Alumni Meritorious Service Award, and the National Association of Athletic Directors' Hall of Fame.
Mr. Quilty leaves his caring and dedicated wife Catherine; his loving children, son Daniel and daughter-in-law Meg of Carmel, New York; daughters Tricia and her longtime friend, Jim Marrone, and Anne Marie; along with grandchildren John and Jacqueline at home in Yonkers; close and loving sister Margaret of Yonkers; and brother Edward and sister-in-law Rose Marie of Clemmons, North Carolina.
