Daniel Spiegel

Daniel J. Spiegel, born March 22, 1944, passed away peacefully at his home on March 31, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Mitzi Spiegel; in-laws, David and Beatrice Kanny; brother, Richard Spiegel; and his beloved longtime partner, Marilyn Robinson. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Usem; children, Emily, Dorie, Ben, (Jaime); grandchildren, Sam and Maddie Spiegel; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dan had an insatiable appetite for all that life had to offer-beauty, music, travel, food, and learning. He was a devoted student of history, with a particular passion for World War II. Dan was also a generous supporter of causes he cared deeply about, including the Minneapolis Heart Institute, the American Jewish Committee (AJC), where he served as president, Beth El Synagogue, Bais Yisroel and The Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York.

Born in North Minneapolis, Dan later moved with his family to Southwest Minneapolis, where he graduated from Southwest High School. He attended the University of Minnesota for his undergraduate degree and then went on to the University of Miami where he earned his Juris Doctor. He began his legal career in Coral Gables, Florida, before returning to Minneapolis with his former wife, Margaret Kanny, where they raised their children, Emily, Ben, and Dorie. He later joined the family business, LaMaur Incorporated, where he served as counsel.

Dan and his longtime partner, Marilyn, cherished their winters in the Cayman Islands, where he enjoyed scuba diving, fishing, the beaches and ocean. They also found great joy in time spent in Montana, taking in its natural beauty and peacefulness.

Dan was quick with a clever one-liner or joke, always ready to draw others in and share a laugh. He had a great sense of style, evident in the way he dressed, the watches he wore, the cars he loved, and his appreciation for a dry Bombay gin martini (shaken, not stirred).

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the compassionate care provided by the Mayo Clinic, Anadolu Hospital in Istanbul. As well as Sholom Nursing Staff and Living Life home care.

His eldest daughter, Emily, lovingly devoted herself to his care and well-being throughout the past three years as he battled cancer.

Funeral service 12:00 PM on Wednesday April 1st, at Beth El Synagogue, 5225 Barry St W., St. Louis Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to AJC, Museum of Jewish Heritage NYC, Minneapolis Heart Institute or donors choice. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 5th (details forthcoming).
