Daniel H Stauber, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Broad Ripple on December 23rd. Dan was born in Indianapolis on December 3rd, 1946, to Paul and Mary Stauber. He played football at North Central High School and at Wabash College until his position, single wing quarterback, was eliminated from play in his sophomore year. After graduating from Wabash, he joined the army reserves and knowing he would like to work with children, subsequently took a job in the juvenile court back in Indianapolis. He completed his master’s in psychology at Ball State University and spent 29 years as a therapist and administrator at Midtown Mental Health Center, work he found extremely gratifying. After retiring from Midtown, he embarked on a second career in private practice, founding Community Psychological Consultants with his business partner and close friend Mary Sanders.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, and thoroughly devoted Cubs fan, Dan was also a committed golfer who enjoyed volunteering at The Fort Golf Course. He was an avid reader and daily crossword puzzler who collected a vast range of facts, quotes, and trivia, and always had an appropriate bon mot at hand to deploy in any situation. He never missed an episode of Jeopardy and challenged himself by attempting to solve final jeopardy based only on the category. He achieved this feat 5 times in his lifetime, a singular point of pride. Dan quietly supported a number of charities and institutions including public radio, Southern poverty law center, Doctor’s without Borders and the World Wildlife Fund.
Dan is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth Stauber and Christine Spiekermann, his two grandsons Austin and Henry Spiekermann, two sons in law, and his beloved Gordon Setter, Addie, to whom he was particularly devoted. His parents and older sister Karen Thomas Murphy preceded him in death. A celebration of his life will be planned for a later date in early 2026.
