Daniel "Papá" Vazquez, 76, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Born on July 19, 1949, in Guayama, Puerto Rico, Daniel lived a life rooted in love, family, and resilience.
As a young adult, Daniel made the courageous journey from Puerto Rico to the United States to begin a new chapter with his beloved wife of 57 years, Caridad Vazquez. Together they built a life and raised their family in Western Massachusetts, where their legacy continues through generations. Springfield became Daniel's home base—a city where he worked diligently as a janitor at Springfield College on Alden Street until his retirement. His work ethic and dedication left an enduring impression on those around him.
Daniel was a devoted son, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is remembered by all who knew him for his radiant smile and hearty laugh that could light up any room. Every farewell was accompanied by an "I love you" or "Dios te bendiga," wrapped in one of his signature giant hugs—gestures that reflected the boundless love he carried in his heart.
He leaves behind his loving wife Caridad; their five children—Nancy, Maria, Daniel Jr., Miguel, and Janet; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five siblings: Gloria Vazquez, Maria I. Vazquez, Maria A. Vazquez, Rene Vazquez, and Gerardo Vazquez, and various nieces and nephews that will carry the legacy that he leaves behind close to his heart. His memory will live on through this abundance of loving family members who will forever cherish the man he was and the optimism he brought into their lives.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Paula A. Vazquez and Julio Vazquez; and siblings Carmen Gonzalez, Elio Vazquez, and Jose A. Vazquez.
A man of many talents and passions, Daniel was especially known for his exceptional cooking. His pasteles and sancocho were legendary among family and friends—not only for their flavor but for the stories they told of his Puerto Rican heritage. He generously shared the secrets behind these dishes with anyone willing to learn, passing down more than recipes he passed down tradition.
Daniel had a tenacious spirit that never wavered. He kept a growing collection of photographs that captured cherished memories across decades. With an uncanny ability to remember every face and name he encountered, Daniel made everyone feel seen—and loved.
