Funeral service for Danny Denton, age 77, of Yantis/Lake Fork, Texas (formally of Carthage) will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs, Texas with Bro. Shannon Hassel officiating. Interment will follow at Redwater Cemetery, 203 Cotton Ford Road, Redwater, Texas Wade Denton, Ethan Denton, Jeremie Calhoun, John Kelly, Brandon Denton, and Clarence Clinton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include Scotty Bates, Claude Robinson, Tommy Tompkins, Johny Gary, Ronnie Bickham, and Jim Dunlap. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mr. Denton passed away at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler on Saturday evening, September 6, 2025.
Danny Denton was born on March 18, 1948 in Henderson, Texas to Webster Denton, Jr. and Joy Ann (Williams) Denton. Danny graduated from Carthage High School with the Class of 1966. He played baseball for Panola College and Sam Houston State University and graduated in 1970 from Sam Houston University with a bachelor’s in business. He attended graduate school at Lamar University and then transferred to SFA to complete his master’s in educational administration. Danny married Cathy Clinton in Hot Springs, Arkansas on January 12, 1996. He worked for 10 years for Texaco Oil in Port Arthur, Texas (1970s-1980s). He then began his career in education as a History, Business, and Government teacher as well as a football, baseball, and track coach, principal, and superintendent. If Danny wasn’t at school, he was fishing somewhere. In April, 2019 Danny and Cathy bought and owned Lake Fork Goods & Tackle and later sold the business in March, 2023. Danny was a member of the Lake Fork Baptist Church.
Danny is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Cathy “Hogan” Clinton Denton; children, Amy Calhoun and husband Jeremie of Liberty City, Texas and Wade Denton and wife Stephonie of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Adeline Elaine Calhoun, Jaicey Joy Rich, Tanner Lee Calhoun, Riley Scott Calhoun, Ethan Blake Denton, Allie Ruth Denton, and Stella Grace Denton; uncle, Alvin Denton, age 97, of Austin, Texas; siblings, Betty Kelly of Richmond, Texas and Dalton Denton and wife Connie of Carthage, Texas; sister-in-law, Sharon Parrish and husband David of Arlington, Texas; sister-in-law, Carla Clinton of Fort Worth, Texas; and brother-in-law, Clarence Clinton and wife Rita of Cumby, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Webster Denton, Jr., and Joy Ann Willaims Denton of Carthage, Texas and brother-in-law, Johnny Kelly.
