DANNY HUGHES
Danny Keith Hughes of Elwood passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, January 28, 2025; the great-grandfather was 79. He was born in Temple, Texas, on December 29, 1945, the son of the late Virgil Hughes and Phyllis Kuhns. Danny's family settled in Indiana, and after attending Frankton High School, he served a four-year tour of duty as a mechanic in the United States Air Force. In November 1965, he married Judy Leisure, and together they shared 23 years until her passing in 1988.
If anyone could be called a jack-of-all-trades, it was Danny. Always ready to take on a new challenge, Danny held a wide variety of positions through his working years, including truck driver, construction worker, factory laborer, prison guard, barber and bartender. When he wasn't on the job, he found pleasure in quiet, peaceful pursuits, especially fishing and hunting. He enjoyed watching western films and listening to classic country music. Danny was also a sports fan, and spent many years coaching youth baseball. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Danny is survived by his children, Scott Hughes (Michelle) of Sweetser, Rod (Alesa Basey) Hughes of Elwood, and Jody (Scott DeHart) Foor of Elwood. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Derek (Hailey) Hughes, Hunter Hughes, Bryant (Rachel) Hughes, Raechel (John) Hughes, April (Bryant) Jeske, Dylan DeHart, Amber (Jason Rodriguez ) Haynes, and Zach Foor; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Mervil Hays; a sister-in-law, LuAnn Graham; a nephew, Greg, and two nieces, Angie and Kathy; his step-mother, Mary Jane Hughes; and his beloved canine companion, Chiquita.
Along with his parents and his wife, Judy Hughes, Danny was preceded in death by a son, Toby Hughes, and a brother, Paul Hughes.
Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood, Indiana, is honored to care for Danny, and his services are scheduled for this Friday, January 31, 2025. A visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, and a funeral ceremony officiated by Rich Leavell will begin at 3:00pm. Danny's wishes were to be cremated, and his ashes will be interred with Judith at the KoP-IOOF Cemetery in Frankton, Indiana, at a later date.
