Darnetha Spiva -Jacobs- Owens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 24, 2024.
Dr. Darnetha (Donna) was born on February 12, 1934, in Oakland, Tennessee, to Rosie Cleaves and Henry Owens.

After high school, she attended Lane College for one year before transferring to Tennessee State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1955, with minors in voice and Spanish. Donna actively participated in desegregation protests at lunch counters in Tennessee. As the first African American Professor, she also played a pivotal role in establishing the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Latino Student Union (La Raza) at Antelope Valley College.

Donna was deeply involved in the civil rights movement, serving as Vice President of the Antelope Valley Chapter of the NAACP. She participated in several NAACP civil rights initiatives in Palmdale and Lancaster, addressing discrimination cases and the acts of desegregating restaurants, skating rinks, bars, and neighborhoods. Donna was instrumental in resolving race-related tensions at Palmdale High School following the Watts Riots of 1965. Dr. Donna's life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to education, civil rights, and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. To Harold, Derrick, and Del,

We are very sorry about the loss of your talented, erudite, and loving mother, Aunt Donna. She, your father, and the three of you welcomed us to California in August 1969. We had a great time visiting back and forth between Palo Alto and Palmdale. Through her gifted and accomplished children and grandchildren, Aunt Donna's memory lives on.

Our deepest condolences,
Aunt Libby, Vanessa, Valerie, and Bruce
