Darnus Leopold Nembhart Sr., a man whose life was marked by resilience and ambition was born on June 1, 1947, in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to the late Esau and Medora Nembhard. With dreams in his heart and determination in his soul, Darnus migrated to the United States at the young age of 19, embarking on a journey that would lead to remarkable achievements and an enduring legacy.
Darnus began his life in the United States in Florida, later relocating to New York City, and ultimately settling in Rochester, NY. Despite the challenges that came with starting anew in a foreign land, Darnus remained steadfast in his pursuit of success. He began working in the film department at Eastman Kodak, a position that allowed him to save diligently and purchase several properties.
Darnus's dream became reality when he purchased a "run-down" building on the corner of Parsell's Avenue and Stout Street. He transformed that building into "Walidad's Groceries," thus becoming the first Jamaican business owner on the city's east side. His entrepreneurial spirit not only provided for his family but also served as an inspiration to the community, helping to pave the way for others to pursue their aspirations.
Darnus was a man whose life was defined by hard work and perseverance. Whether in business or in his personal relationships, he exemplified dedication and a tireless commitment to creating a better world for those around him.
On May 13, 2025, Darnus departed this life, leaving behind a family who held him dearly. He is survived by his sons, Mario Nembhart and Darnus Nembhart Jr. (Lindsay); daughters, Eddene McMillan (Demetrius) and April Nembhart; grandchildren, Tatyana Nembhart, Camron Nembhart, Aryana Nembhart, Kingston Nembhart, and Celia Nembhart; great-grandchildren, Hazel Nembhart and Ariyah Nembhart; and countless other relatives, friends, and community associates.
Darnus's legacy lives on in the memories of all who knew him. We will forever remember his smile, laughter, kind eyes, and gentle soul.
