I met Darrel during his development of his River Front projects in the 1990's and we made it a regular meet up for the next 30 sum years. It was always a delight to be with Darrel as we shared many similar interests. One time we drove to Upper Michigan's looking for property to develop his dream of building a large log lodge. This lodge was not for tourists but to have a place in the forest for non violent prisoners to learn vocational building trades and business management techniques. Another great one was when he wanted to develop a manufacturing technique to recycle used plastic milk bottles into parts for easy to build geodesic dome homes for people in countries hit by hurricanes. Each piece of the dome would come shipped in a molded plastic box that later was used as the bath room space in the home. Each part was light enough for a mother and a child to carry to the place they wanted it built. It all snapped together with simple instructions and no tools. Of the many development project ideas Darrel shared with me they always had a purpose....helping others. Years ago Darrel purchased an expensive Santa Claus suit and visited Sheboygan area nursing homes at Christmas time. Darrel was an excellent drafts man and had a passion for drawing and sketching his ideas on copy paper, working out the details night by night often until 3:00am. Somewhere these drawings must be found and donated to the Kohler Art Center as he was a true "Sheboygan Original" who deeply cared about other people. Like hundreds of other area folks I am really going to miss this guy. Lately we talked about building log houses in heaven where there will be an unending supply of trees and an unending amount of time. Now isn't that one of his best ideas?

We are very sorry for your loss and our deepest sympathies to the Mand family. Thankful to have known and have many fond memories of my (E.J.) then larger than life brother-in-law from the 70's, 80's & 90's. Good times shared, great stories told and the many contributions Darrel made and the legacy he has left for his family, friends and the community at large are remarkable. We were impressed with his many talents, creativity and accomplishments that in turn helped to influence my own career path and appreciation for music, architecture, construction, cars and the arts.
