MAYSVILLE — Darrell Thomas Bussell, a devout man of God, cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many, left this earth and made his journey home on April 14, 2025.
Darrell came into this world with fireworks on July 4, 1958, the son of the late Harvey and Lynn Bussell of Maysville. That day was celebrated every year by Darrell hosting a full-fledged cookout where all family, friends, and anyone walking by were invited to feast.
There was hardly a job that Darrell had not done, starting at a young age, growing up and starting life. He loved to tell stories of them all, from mowing yards, frying chicken, washing cars, making shoes, and a long stint at Parker Tobacco Co., where he used and mastered a lot of his skills. After a major injury and company closure, Darrell increased his rental property business, making many friends with a lot of his tenants.
But the most dramatic change in Darrell's life came in 1983, when he turned his life over to the Lord. His testimony was shared with everyone he met. He loved giving "glory" to God. Over the years, he served in numerous capacities at churches he attended, Maysville Nazarene, Hickory Grove in Tollesboro, and the last four years at Maysville Church of Christ in Christian Union, but his heart was for using his God-given talents of incredible knowledge of fixing anything.
He could replace the roof to tiling the basement floor; he could repair the electrical wiring to the water lines; he could pick up the kids on the bus to rebuilding the motor in the bus; from the smallest detail to the largest project, he was there for his church, family, friends and even strangers (who didn't remain strangers for long).
In the early 1980's he met and married Linda Kitchen Taylor. They loved and raised two daughters together, Tammy Lee Warner (Jim) and Tonia Carol Zornes (Adam), both of Maysville area. He and Linda had 35 happy years together before Linda suddenly passed away.
In 2021, he married Carol Linville Ruark and they expanded a family to nearly 40 descendants, and increasing rapidly. Darrell once commented that even as a young man, he always knew he wanted children and with adding Carol's son, Craig Askin (Heather) of Nicholasville, Ky., and daughter, Sheena Denham (Shaun) of Sadieville, Ky., he now had four. The couple spent four unbelievable happy years together before Darrell's well-fought 2-year battle with brain cancer eventually overtook him. Darrell spent those two years of illness testifying and dedicating his life to drawing as many to the Lord as he could. He never missed an opportunity to encourage, pray for, witness to, meet needs, generously give, fix the broken things in people's lives (physical needs and spiritual), and on and on. He left this old world, fasting and praying for lost family that he wants to join him.
Besides his wife, daughters and step- children, he leaves behind the grieving hearts of grandchildren, Randy Dixon, Brandon Dixon (Ashley), Kurt Martin (Breauna), Matthew Dixon (Megan), Savannah Martin, Seth Hutchison, Kaity, Cody, Conner Askin, Skyler and Xander Denham; great-grandchildren are Benjamin, Corbin, Carson, Hayden, Salem, Elijah, Aaliyah, Abi, Anna, Liam and Carter. Greatly missing him, there will be two loving sisters, Brenda Bennett (David) and Patricia Lennex (Jimmy). He will be greatly missed by his brother and sisters-in-law, Robert Kitchen (Bonnie), Connie Maher, Brenda McBride, Shay England (Jeff) and David Linville (Jeanne). He will be missed by so many nieces, nephews, his church family, life-long friends, and special friends he found along the way, far too many and not enough pages to add.
Darrell leaves with us his fun spirit, his laugh, his humor, his love, his unforgettable stories, and his request for all of you to "carry the torch" to live for and tell about Jesus.
In accordance with his wishes, he requested any memory donations to go to the Building Fund of the Maysville Church of Christ in Christian Union, so dear to his heart.
Services for Darrell Bussell will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at Maysville Church of Christ in Christian Union with Pastors Wilma Erwin and David Hickerson officiating.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Kurt, Seth, Randy, Matthew, Brandon, and Buddy Holland.
Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m. at the church.
Brell and Son Funeral Home is assisting the family.
