Darrell was born on October 7, 1943, in Willmar, Minnesota, to Harold and Margaret (Nelson) Fostervold. He was baptized and confirmed at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church and later became a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and then St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Following its closure, he became a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. He spent his entire life in the Willmar/Kandiyohi area, attended District #78 Country School, and graduated from Willmar High School in 1961. Darrell had a wonderful childhood growing up on the family farm and attending the one room country school just down the road.

On May 18, 1968, Darrell was united in marriage to Mary Ann Sussner at St. Peter Catholic Church in Canby, MN. They made their home in the Willmar/Kandiyohi area and were happily married for 57 years. Darrell became employed at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and continued to work there for 36 years before retiring.

Never one to sit idle, Darrell's working career extended well beyond BNSF. He also worked for Kandiyohi Cooperative Creamery, Halvorsons, Little Crow Marine, Gustafson Dairy, and held several other miscellaneous jobs, while additionally farming alongside his father, Harold. His love of farming prevailed throughout his life.

Darrell was a tireless volunteer and dedicated community supporter. He served for over 25 years on the Kandiyohi Power Cooperative Board, was a member of the Kandiyohi County Fair Board for 36 years, and served as president and council member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He was also a founding member of the Kandi Countrysider's 4-H Club.

Darrell's pride and joy were his grandchildren and he was happiest spending time with his family. He attended every game, concert, and grandchild's event with smiles and words of encouragement and enjoyed many hours teaching his grandchildren to drive four wheelers and snowmobiles. He also spent many years bowling and playing softball.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Cheryl (Damon) Pearce of Wethersfield, Connecticut; son, Ryan (Dawn) Fostervold of Kandiyohi; son-in-law, Troy Reynolds of Spicer; seven grandchildren: Hannah, Alyssa, Owen, Taggert, Jorja, Brady, and Colton; sister-in-law, Lois (Tom) Renstrom of Willmar; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Brenda Reynolds, his granddaughter, Jenna Reynolds; and his brothers, Lowell, Richard, and Ronald.
