Darrell Wayne Korthals was born on March 20, 1948 to Gerrit and Thersa (Gisolf) Korthals in Luverne, Minnesota. Growing up, Darrell attended Jasper Schools. During his teenage years, he helped Glenis and Donna Geerdes farm in George, Iowa. Darrell moved back to the Pipestone area where he met the love of his life Nelma (Post) Korthals. They were married June 28, 1971 in Edgerton, Minnesota. They were blessed with two boys Darl and Donn. Darrell was a jack of all trades, elevator construction, electrical assistant, Pipestone Meat Locker, Luverne Bumper, Bayliner, and spent his most recent years installing flooring with Gary Haupert, until retiring in 2006.

When not working or learning a new skill, Darrell was a member of the Pipestone Lions Club where he was the “Clown Car Driver,” he enjoyed making the children laugh and smile as he drove by. He enjoyed participating in enduro races and demolition derbies. Darrell was a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion.

Darrell found joy in fishing, camping, and woodworking where he made rocking horses and games. He enjoyed traveling down to Texas for 17 years where he could always be found playing a card game of “31” or shooting pool. Darrell also enjoyed creating pop can spinners out of old pop cans. He would make 30-40 of them each year and sell them at Fig Tree RV in Texas. When he took time to sit, Darrell enjoyed turning on a good western TV show. Darrell passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 77 years, eight months and 28 days.

Darrell is survived by his wife of 54 years Nelma Korthals of Pipestone, Minnesota; children, Darl (Amy) Korthals of Pipestone and Donn (Elizabeth) Korthals-Feezell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandchildren, Zachery, Landonn, Eleanor, Jordan, Austin and Tyler; siblings, Rodger (Linda) Korthals of Temple, Texas, Valerie Korthals of Temple, Texas and Bonitta Korthals of Steen, Minnesota. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit and Thersa Korthals; sister, Patrica Johnson; and nephew, Greg Johnson.
