Darrell Smith Obituary

Darrell Alan Smith

1948 ~ 2025

Tooele, UT-Darrell Alan Smith, 77, passed away on September 22, 2025, in his hometown of Tooele, Utah. He was born on March 27, 1948, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Melba Lavin and Donald Smith. Darrell was the eldest of five children and lived a life deeply rooted in faith, service, and a profound love for his family and community.

Darrell's devotion to his faith was evident throughout his life. He served for 30 months in the Stockholm, Sweden mission, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved those he taught and served with, especially a particular native who captured his whole heart, Hjordis Sjostedt. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 11, 1970.

Darrell tried his hand in many occupations including running a restaurant (King's Chicken), sales, advertising and even a little bit of farming before he settled into a career that he was passionate about - teaching. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Utah and later a masters degree in counseling. His passion for education led him to teach public school in Dugway, Grantsville, Park City and Heber. Darrell also worked as a seminary teacher for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, instructing youth in grades 9 through 12. His commitment to spiritual education extended further when he helped establish an LDS Institute program for college and young single adults in the Tooele area-a legacy that continues to bless many.

Darrell was a devoted father to Hans (Alicia) and Ulrica "Rickie." He was a proud grandfather to Christian (Kaycee), Drew, Carter, Ellie, Mason, Elizabeth (Nathan), Ben (Maddi), Tyler, and Kate, and a great-grandfather to Tyler, Stella, and Eleanore. His family was the center of his world. He was a loyal fan cheering for each one from the sidelines, to crowded stadiums and prestigious concert halls. He celebrated their accomplishments with pride and supported them with a steadfast love that they have never doubted.

An avid outdoorsman with an adventurous spirit, Darrell loved camping, running mountain trails, hiking rugged paths, scuba diving into vibrant underwater worlds, and capturing nature's beauty through photography. These passions brought him joy and reflected his appreciation for God's creations.

Darrell is also remembered by his siblings Lyn Smith, Dirk Smith and Karlene Wells (Mike). He was preceded by his parents, Melba Lavin and Donald Adelbert Smith, and his sister Marlene Hamilton.

A viewing will be held on September 28, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Tate Mortuary, 110 S Main Street. Funeral services will take place on September 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Tooele 1st Ward building, 253 S 200 E, with a viewing from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to the service.

Such a difficult loss. My thoughts and prayers are with the Smith family as they process through their grief. I´m so sorry you lost a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, mentor and friend. He was many different roles to all of us. But overall a wonderful human.
I always appreciated our chats in seminary, at church, in the neighborhood, and at the Smith home while I was eating the delicious food prepared by Hjordis and hanging out with one my dearest friends, Rickie.
I enjoyed looking at Darrell´s photographs and learning about how he created some next-level special effects. He was very talented and passionate about the art.
I recall those times like it was yesterday and treasure the experiences we shared together.
I´m so sorry I missed Darrell´s events but would love to connect with Hjordis and Rickie. Love you, ladies! Text when you can. 801-647-3537

My deepest sympathies to his wonderful family . I worked for him at Kings Chicken. He was a great boss. Plus I helped his mom at Cottage Glen, what a sweet lady ! Now they are together. Sending prayers of comfort to ALL.
