I have been bringing my youngest daughter, Emma, to the VA Home where Darrell worked almost every day since she was born (she's almost 3). She's gotten to know and love him very much. She acts shy around him, but still plays, smiles, and laughs with and around him and when he walks away, unknown to Darrell, she complains and asks where "Peepaw" is going and "Can he come back?" When I found out what happened, I kept waiting to wake up from this horrible dream. My first thoughts went straight to his wife, kids, and grandchildren. His wife is such a sweet, wonderful woman. Even though I didn't get to know her in depth personally, Darrell spoke about her so much and with such love, I feel like I got to know her. He was obviously proud of his kids and spoke about them with plenty of hilarious stories, but those conversations always, ALWAYS led to his grandchildren. I've never seen a grandfather more proud of his grandchildren. I always looked forward to the new stories and pictures that I knew I was going to get to see when I ran into him. I can't say enough to his family how sorry I am. With all of my heart, I want to let them know that so many people know and feel that the world is a better place because he was in it and is more dull and dark now.
