Darrell Paul Wekwert, 60, of Houghton Lake passed away on Monday October 9, 2023 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Darrell was born on June 12, 1963 in Ferndale, Michigan to Leo and Gale (Johnson) Wekwert. He grew up in the Royal Oak area graduating from Kimball High School in Royal Oak. On June 18, 1982 in Hazel Park Darrell was married to Barbara L. Toney.He worked as a Master Welder for Detroit Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 292. The couple moved to Houghton Lake from Hazel Park in 2009. Darrell was a member of the Houghton Lake Eagles and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was also known to enjoy a game of poker or playing shuffleboard at the Eagles. His real love was his wife, Barbara, and spending time with his grandchildren as the greatest Papa.
Surviving Mr. Wekwert are his loving wife of 41 years, Barbara L. Wekwert of Houghton Lake; two sons, Christopher (Valerie) Wekwert of WV, and Ryan (Lauren) Wekwert of St. Clair Shores; daughter, Amber (Charles) Rocheleau of Davison; six grandchildren, Chloe, Gavin, Charles II, Liam, Emily Rose, and expectant grandchild in February 2024; his parents Leo and Gale Wekwert of Houghton Lake; two brothers, Robert (Glenda) Wekwert of Rochester Hills, and Leonard (Caroline) Wekwert of Roseville; two sisters, Loretta (Frank) Galea of Warren, and Marjorie Cassar of Madison Heights; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Darrell was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Leo and Emily Wekwert and his maternal grandparents, Melvin and Marjorie Johnson.
Memorial Services for Darrell Paul Wekwert will be conducted at 11:00 am Sunday October 29, 2023 from Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel with Pastor James Bostic officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday October 29, 2023 from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Christler Funeral Home Houghton Lake Chapel. Memorial contributions in memory of Darrell are asked to be directed to the family. Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family. I loved Darrell so much, he was a great person. My favorite memory of Darrell was from many years ago. At the time I was dating his brother Len and I was invited to dinner at their family's house. Everything was going nicely, we had a delicious meal, and all of a sudden there's a grape on my plate. Then another, and I think a little piece of bread. When I look across the table, there's Darrell mischeviously and innocently looking around. I like to think of it as my initiation into the family and a memory I will always treasure.
Darrell, you had the kindest, most generous heart; you were nice to everyone no matter what. I never heard you say anything mean about anyone ever. Thank you for being such a nice part of my life, for treating me like a sister, and for some fun memories.
Sending much love and prayers to our family; may we all find comfort in fond memories and may Darrell's memory be eternal.
