Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home - SachseDarren Young, 63, of Garland, Texas, went home to Jesus on February 18, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with COPD and cancer. Born on August 15, 1962, in Dallas, Darren was the son of Donald G. and Doris J. (Herriott) Young. He grew up in the northeast Dallas area, attending Dan D. Rogers Elementary, Benjamin Franklin Junior High, and graduating with the Hillcrest High School Class of 1981. Much of his childhood was spent running around the neighborhood near Keller’s Hamburgers at Northwest Highway and Abrams, a place full of memories and mischief.
Darren had a natural gift for fixing things—a true handyman and do it yourselfer who believed almost anything could be repaired with enough patience and determination. He loved the outdoors and found joy in golfing, fishing, motorcycle rides, camping, and pulling the occasional prank. Beneath his tough exterior was a man who was sweet, thoughtful, and deeply loyal to those who truly knew him. At age 19, Darren began his career in the HVAC field in North Dallas. Over the decades, he worked for multiple companies, steadily building his expertise and reputation. By age 60, he had advanced to Building Engineer, overseeing operations for several office buildings—work he took pride in and performed with dedication.
Darren married Lorri Young, and they shared their lives together from 1982 to 2006. He is survived by his mother, Doris Young, and his brother, David Young. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Young, his sister, Donna (Young) Lassiter, and his brother, Donald Young Jr.
A memorial service will be held at: Charles Smith & Son Funeral Home 2925 5th Street Sachse, Texas Thursday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m.
Friends and family are invited to attend and to share memories of Darren on the funeral home’s website.
