Darryl and I were very close friends at Henry Grady High School, in Atlanta...We lost touch after graduation.....I will always remember him as a big friendly guy, always a smile on his face...and a great friend..

I am very sorry to learn of Darryl's passing. He was my Phi Ep fraternity mentor during my freshman and pledge year. Also, he lived practically across the street from me in Atlanta with his parents and sister. In fact, I even dated Paula one occasion. Darryl and I spent a lot of time together and were close friends during our Ga Tech years. Also, his father Robert Leiter was my attorney, pro bono, one time which I was involved in a car accident. He was successful in defending me and got me the medical treatment that I needed. If Sharon and/or Paula would like to talk with me about Darryl's early days at Ga Tech, that would be great. I live in Nashville,TN and I am in the phone book.

I met Dr. Leiter recently, as I was also a student in his "Cosmic Questions" course. Although I only spent a few months learning from him and his wife Sharon, they had an impact on my life and provided a great foundation for my continuing education. They were a wonderful team and the love they had for their family was evident. His lessons and stories will stay with me always.
Sharon, my thoughts and prayers are with you and all who loved Darryl. I hope you will find peace and rest assured we students are glad and thankful to have had our BIS experience with both of you.

Although I never took his class, I met him when I took a class his wonderful wife taught at UVA to the BIS program. He was always personable and shared wonderful stories with us students. They are both wonderful people, this is such a loss to the UVA BIS community. Sharon may strength and peace be with you in this difficult time.

Darryl has been an inspiration to me since we first became acquainted about a dozen years ago. We have had a fruitful collaboration in which we have developed an alternative model of the compact astronomical objects known nowadays as black holes. I could not have done any of this alone and without Darryl's insight into some very deep physics. Darryl understood the big picture while I worked to fill in the smaller details.

I was privileged to spend some small amounts of time with Darryl on three occasions. I learned that he was a gentle man, a seeker of truth and the wise head of a devoted family. I admire him greatly and I will miss him sorely. I shall keep his wife, Sharon, and his family in my prayers. Stan Robertson (Broken Arrow, OK)

Dr. Leiter was an amazing professor, and delighted in seeing his students learn the principles he so loved. He will be missed by the BIS program. I am greatful that I had the opportunity to learn from him. My prayers go out to Sharon and the rest of their family. 4th Tidewater Cohort / UVA Class of 2010
