In the early 80's, Darryl bravely invested his life savings and worked long hours to create an employee assistance program (EAP). He did not take a government handout, but the Reagan Administration lowered income taxes at the time which meant that Darryl could keep more of his profits. He wisely reinvested those profits in computers, more employees and office space. It was a prosperous time for the country as America was being rebuilt from the bottom up. Darryl was doing that for Alaska.

His company's mission was to confidentially address its customers addiction and mental health concerns and to promote more cohesive work environments. He modestly understood that he had to grow as a person if his company was to grow economically. So he continuously educated himself and regularly sought input from his customers and staff.

By the mid 90's, he owned the premier EAP in the country. Its state of the art
centerpiece was the "employer referral" or "job jeopardy" process.
Troubled employees were given an opportunity to transform their lives for the better. Many jobs, and perhaps even lives, were saved. EAP professionals
from the lower '48 visited Anchorage to learn from Darryl's success during this period.

In nearly two decades of operation, Darryl's business provided many secure jobs to individuals in the community. I was one of the counselors who worked there. It was the most fulfilling job of my career and oh do I miss those lengthy conversations with Darryl !

Many satisfied clients stated that they would not have sought counseling if their employer did not provide them the "free" counseling benefit. Most often they received what they needed and in a timely manner. How rare is that today?
Research has shown that companies who invest in wellness programs like Darryl's experience reduced health costs. So his EAP company was a win for all concerned.

Darryl's entrepreneurial spirit and compassionate heart (directly and indirectly)
impacted so many people in a beneficial way.We sorely need more leaders like him in our future.
