Daryl Gery Obituary

Northfield - Daryl Stephen Gery, age 68 of Northfield, MN, passed away Friday, July 12th, 2024 of natural causes.

Daryl was first introduced to his adoptive parents Frank and Theona Gery February 3"* 1958 at the Chestnut Hill Shopper's World in Chester, Massachusetts. On February 5** he came all dressed up in his Sunday best to permanently become Daryl Stephen Gery.

By 1962 the Gery family had made its way to Northfield as a family of five with Frank and Theona adopting Sondra (Massachusetts) and Jimmy (Chicago).

Daryl graduated from Northfield H.S. Class of '73 while restoring his 1963 Chevy Impala, becoming a State Treasurer for VICA (Vocational Industrial Club of America) and playing goalie for the then Northfield Club Hockey team. The club years later would become the Northfield Boys High School hockey team. Those early years were a challenge because the school board said "If these boys play hockey they cannot compete in other sports at the high school." The strong group of boys held their ground and persevered until the board backed down.

Upon graduation Daryl pursued Vocational training for Tool and Die at Mankato Votech. Daryl held a variety of jobs over the years. Bar tending in Mankato and the Rueb "N" Stein in Northfield, and as a waiter at Schumacher's with his good friend Charlie Dashow. Jobs followed in Northfield and Cannon Falls, IDS Tower in Minneapolis, Lakeville and back to Sheldahl a second and final time.

Daryl always lived his life independently creating joy with friends. He could be silly and play the clown just to have people laugh. His antics during family gatherings always had a Daryl moment.

He loved all kinds of music and his many hobbies. Playing around on his guitars or keyboard was always close by. Motorized hobbies captured his interest at an early age. Model building of cars, planes, ships continued throughout his life. From there an enthusiasm for electric airplanes and cars became a passion. He loved his 1700 Yamaha Roadstar motorcycle and riding it gave him that real sense of freedom in life away from the daily grind. Riding the Lake Michigan Circle Tour was one of the highlights in his life, along with other charity events like the Flood Run. Summertime was riding time.

Daryl is proceeded in death by his parents Frank and Theona. He is survived by his sister, Sondra; brother, Jim (Mili); step mother, Marie; step brothers, Christopher and Patrick Stewart; nieces, Thea and Itzel (Gery); and nephew, Jason (Teske).

When you are hoisting a glass or were someone who rode with him say a cheer for Daryl. We know he will be smiling.

The memorial service will be a private service in the presence of close family.

I worked with Daryl for several years at Sheldahl. He was a great guy to work with; smart, funny and always willing to drop what he was doing and give you a hand. I was hoping to get together with him after he left but it just didn't work out. He will be missed.
