Having been a Washington Redskin for many years starting in '74 at age 7 when I moved to the metro D.C. area, Dave Butz was one of my favorite players to watch. I just came to this website to find of his passing. My condolences to his family and friends.

I met Dave when he came to South Dakota to a pheasant hunting show. He became a good friend and we stayed in touch over the years. He was a gentle giant and a great guy. He will truly be missed. RIP my friend.

This week the Fine family lost a special person and
football player..
Dave Butz was my dads favorite player/ friend when they worked and played together. They would take turns playing jokes on each other. Dave would shake the tower my Dad would shoot practice from and yo could hear Dad yelling at him constantly.
After the Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1988 Dave gave the Super Bowl trophy to Nate to hold on the plane flight back to DC.
The gentle giant and the 5’6” photographer bonded like two brothers.
So we all have lost a great player and person with class.

I hope you find our dad up there somewhere you both deserve each other.
Love you Dave Butz.

Dave meant a lot to our football program and our school. We could highlight his athletic feats and his giant legend grew over the years. His professional career with Washington made us all proud. But he was an inspiration away from the field just as much because of his humble, hard working demeanor. We have dedicated the rest of our season in Mr. Butz's honor. Our boys, 33 years after his last game, still understand what he meant to this community.

I was stunned to hear about Dave´s Passing I had tried to contact him for a visit while I was here in St. Louis Visiting another friend I emailed him on the Drive over last Sunday? I awoke on Friday to y to he news and was completely crushed.
Dave and I lost touch for twenty years and I was able to reunite with help from Leroy Keys from Purdue. We talked or txted over the past 20 yrs and it was like old times. We spoke once or twice a month. As reserved as he was Dave had a great since of humor I will miss dearly:)

I was so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was a teammate on the Redskins, and a good friend. He was truly a gentle giant. He was a great player, but very humble. My thoughts and prayers are with the Butz family. I've had a number of dealings with his son Dave over the years, as he is one of the best agents in the NFL.

Dave was a great friend for many years. We played together for 10 - 12 years on softball and basketball teams at Scott AFB and throughout Metro-East. His family will understand how saddened I am at his passing. Bob Kenny

Dave was a gentle giant. He filmed a pheasant hunting show on our farm here in South Dakota years ago. He was a great guy and we stayed in touch on messenger and text messages over the years. He will be missed.

To The Butz Family:

It was an honor and privilege to work with Dave Butz when we were both with the Washington Football Team in 1975. What many people don't know is that Dave and I went to competing high schools, he at Maine South in Park Ridge, IL and myself at Niles West in Skokie, IL.

I was there the night that Dave as a great baketball player at Maine South, shattered one of our backboards, during pre-game warmups.

He was a a great athlete and a good friend who I got to know better in Washington. We'd often talk about the "shattered backboard" and when I ran into him at a Chicago Bulls game nearly 30 years ago, he told me he still had a piece of thet backboard.

A TREMENDOUS individual, taken from us way too soon. My sincere condolences to his family.
