David (Dave) McCleland Amos, 92, of Canton, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, in the presence and comfort of his family, who loved him very much. Dave was born on September 27, 1933, in
Toronto, Ohio, to Orville and Mary Lois (Kilmer) Amos. He grew up in Pottery Addition, Ohio, and graduated from Steubenville "Big Red" High School. Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War from 1951–1954. He was a member of the 101st Airborne Infantry, 53rd Regiment, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant Squad Leader.
In 1955, Dave joined the Weirton Steel Corporation in Weirton, West Virginia. During his 37-year career, he retired as General Manager of Industrial Relations. During this time, in 1984, Weirton Steel was the largest employee-owned company in the United States, employing over 13,000 workers. The plant was a massive economic force for nearly a century, producing significant amounts of tin plate and raw steel.
Dave studied Industrial Engineering and earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio University, then later earned his master's degree in education from the University of Dayton, all while working at Weirton Steel.
In 1956, Dave married Audra Ruth Rice in Steubenville, Ohio. She survives him and is currently 90 years old. They were married for 69 years. Together, they had two sons: Matthew (Chris Cooley) Amos of Canton, Georgia, and Shaun Amos of Keedysville, Maryland. He is also survived by three grandchildren: David J. and Mattie (Dotson) Amos of
Woodstock, Georgia; Bronwen (Amos) and Joey O'Dell of
Woodstock, Georgia, Reagan and Katie (Flanagan) Amos of Oxford, Alabama; and nine great-grandchildren: Ben, Levi, Connor, Delainey, Karsyn, Amos, Deacon, Allie Grace, and Annie Kate.
Dave's life was wholly given to the Lord. He was baptized at the age of 12 and was a lifelong, faithful member of the Church of Christ. He served as an elder for over 30 years in two different congregations. His extensive missionary work, as well as preaching stateside, led to thousands being baptized, including 16 trips to Africa, nine trips to India, and numerous other foreign trips. Dave also had the unique opportunity to teach Bible and history to many young people, as well as his own grandchildren, for 10 years at Knoxville Christian School. Many came to Christ as a result of his teaching.
Dave was an avid deer hunter and "racked" about as many deer as he did souls for the Lord. He was truly an amazing marksman. He was also a Pittsburgh sports enthusiast extraordinaire and passed that passion down through his posterity. In addition, he played a great deal of golf throughout his life and scored two holes-in-one, while winning many team and individual awards.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, William "Bill" Amos of Steubenville, Ohio; and one sister, Shirley Amos-Sewell, also of Steubenville.
