David Barnard Obituary

Niantic - David R. Barnard, of Niantic, passed away peacefully and with dignity at his home Jan. 17, 2026, after a long journey with Parkinson's Disease that he faced with quiet strength and without complaint. He was encircled by love and comforted by his entire family and his best friend until his last breath.

Born April 7, 1948, in New London, David was the son of Noella Boucher and Ralph Barnard. He spent his life as the patriarch of his family. He led by example and instilled a strong work ethic and the importance of education. People fortunate enough to know him knew that his family was the light of his life. He was known for his humble demeanor and kindness, qualities that remained evident even as he faced the challenges of Parkinson's with resilience and grace.

David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and brother. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janice (McCord) Barnard; his daughters, Katherine (Kay) Baez and Lauren Ashe; and his two sons-in-law, whom he considered sons, John Baez and Bror Ashe. He is survived by his four beloved grandchildren, whom he treasured from the moment they were born: John David Baez Jr., Mason Samuel Baez, Magdalena Irene Ashe and James Barnard Ashe. He is also survived by his grandson John David's fiancée, Olivia Massey. He is further survived by his older sister, Susanne (Barnard) Ward, who always referred to him as the best baby brother.

Throughout his life, David enjoyed sailing his Hobie Cat on the river, playing hockey with the Over the Hill Gang, and later in life with his grandsons, and riding his bike in town. David never missed the opportunity to see his four grandchildren perform in concerts, attend art shows, special events, and especially cheering them on in their sports. These moments brought him joy and shaped many cherished memories for those who shared them with him.

David's family gratefully acknowledges his best friend, Dane Proctor, whose friendship since '62, and whose continued friendship, support, and visits, meant more than words can express.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A funeral home service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at the Neilan Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic.

In lieu of flowers, please honor David by spending time with those who mean the most to you, sharing a meal together as he so deeply enjoyed - gathered around the table, laughing, enjoying good food a cold Coca Cola and fine desserts.

Our dad and husband will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the unconditional love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the life he lived. He never faltered and never let us down. "Thank you - always and forever-your girls, xo."

Dear Janice, Lauren, Katherine and family, We loved David and remember him as he kept his youthful spirit and joy forever . I would tell him he found the fountain of youth and to let me know where it is. He was a great brother in law, husband and all around wonderful man. Here in Tucson our family has been praying and thinking of Janice and the girls in this time of mourning. I remember his fine work ethic and his friendship with George( his father in law and our Dad) . Janice and David were salt of the earth as sister Lauren Jane Todd would often say. David is forever in our hearts. God bless the Barnard Family. Sending love and prayers to you all. Love always. Mary Leonard Charlotte and Leonard Jr.

Dear Janice and family, Please accept my sincere sympathy on Dave's passing. I will always be thankful for all the help he gave me clearing my back yard in the early 80's to put in a pool. I have good memories of playing sand lot football with him when we were in junior high. I also remember sailing with him on his hobie cat after pulling him out into the bay. May his memory be eternal. John
