David Binnie Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, Inc. - Columbus on Dec. 29, 2025.
David E. Binnie a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend passed away on the morning of November 26, 2025 at the Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus, Indiana.

He was born in Vincennes, Indiana on April 4, 1941 to Doris R. Binnie (nee Ireland) and Lester H. Binnie. He was the middle child of 3 boys--Larry, David and Stanley.

He attended grade school at Consolidated #1 School in Vincennes and high school at Warren Central in Indianapolis where he was the valedictorian of his class of 1959. After receiving BS and MS degrees from Purdue University, David was awarded a PhD degree in physics from Penn State University.

David was a smart kid, so it was not surprising that he went on to become the valedictorian of his high school class and acquired these impressive advanced degrees from two renowned universities.

After graduating from Penn State, David joined the faculty of the Physics Department at the Uniontown Branch of Penn State University where he earned tenure through his accomplishments in teaching and research.

After retirement, David moved to Pittsburgh where he lived for many years. He enjoyed traveling and studying maps, and had an uncanny ability to look at a map and memorize many of the details.

He enjoyed listening to and watching his favorite sports teams play their games. His favorite teams were the Purdue Boilermakers, the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During his retirement, David and his brothers met several times on trips to share family experiences. A special trip was when they all met in Linlithgow, Scotland to explore the area where their ancestors lived.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of the people who were so thoughtful and went out of their way to help with David's care the last few months of his life. This includes his nephew Steve Binnie and his wife Sally, my wife Kim, his neighbor Sara and the staff at Crestwood South in Indianapolis. I also want to thank the doctors and nurses that were involved in David's care, the staff at Silver Oaks Health Campus and Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana.

David is survived by his brother Stan Binnie of Arcata, California; nephew Steve of Columbus, Indiana; and nieces Carole, Joyce, Susan, Maribeth, Madeleine and numerous other cousins.

David's ashes will be buried next to his parents in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near North Manchester, Indiana. A graveside memorial will be held at the cemetery in mid-May to honor the memory of David's life.
