Martha T. SHANNON

1932 - 2025

Ponte Vedra Beach - Martha Shannon, 93, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the McGraw Center for Caring of Community Hospice surrounded by family.

Martha was born in Summit, NJ, graduating from Summit High School in 1949. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Wellesley College in 1953.

She spent much of her life volunteering in organizations such as the Spokane Juvenile Court Board, League of Women Voters (where she served a term as president of the Spokane chapter) and the Spokane Housing Board. She was elected to the Spokane City Council in 1978. While in Spokane, Martha held the position of Development Director for Connoisseur Concerts and then KPBX, the Spokane public radio station.

In 1986, Martha moved to Washington DC to work in long-term development for National Public Radio. She continued her public service after being elected to the ANC for Dupont Circle (1991-1995; 1999 -2001). After retiring, Martha continued her volunteer work in Washington D.C, Internationally and finally in St. Augustine, Florida, where she was actively involved with the St. Augustine Foot Soldiers Remembrance Project, Inc.

Martha moved to Vicar's Landing in PVB, Florida, in 2011, and continued to be active in the community serving as house representative for both the independent community and later for the assisted living community. She sat on the scholarship committee, volunteered in the library, and aided the Vicar's Voice newsletter staff by proofreading and writing the obituaries.

She is survived by her son, Mark Shannon, and wife, Montse of Solsona, Catalonia; son, David Shannon and wife, Heidi of Burbank, CA; daughter, Kimberly Shannon of Winona, MN; and grandchildren, Sarah Mungaray, Teo Shannon and Emma Shannon.
